MacSpace – I built a free, open-source app that explains System Data and frees what's safe to delete

Wait 5 sec.

Hi, I'm Gio the developer of macbat.app I didn't understand why macOS took so much space with system files and for the past month I've been working on a project to investigate what those files are and what we can delete. Now that the project is more mature I'm publishing the app for free (and notarized!) and open-source. If anyone wants to take a look and contribute to the project I'd really appreciate it! The idea is to soon turn the app into a complete cleaning solution for the Mac. Always free and open source! GitHub: 1architect/macspace-releases MacSpace is a Mac app for macOS 27 that: Reveals what fills System DataSystem Data is the part of the disk System Settings doesn't explain. MacSpace does the math the same way and breaks it down: caches, logs, reports, system assets, app data, version history. What it can't name shows as Not identified. Frees what is safe to deleteThe Free button clears caches of closed apps, diagnostic reports older than 7 days, and unused system assets. Version history and leftover macOS updates have their own buttons and confirmation. Turns off Apple Intelligence and deletes its modelsOne switch turns it off and deletes the ~12 GB macOS keeps on disk. Turn it back on and MacSpace restores your Siri language and voice. Frees purgeable space on demandSpace outside System Data that macOS would only free when the disk is almost full. Free up to asks it to do it now. Cloud files kept on this Mac return to the cloud with Remove Downloads. Disables system tracking with 14 switchesAnalytics, ads, Siri AI, Visual Intelligence, Spotlight web results, Game Center and more. Disable all turns them off, Enable all restores what MacSpace changed. MacSpace checks every 15 minutes and turns back off what was re-enabled. Liquid Glass designAn interface based on Apple's design guidelines. A tile for the disk and a tile for each module, each tile opens its page. Seven themes with day and night appearance, in 5 languages. Automatic cleanup and notificationsClean automatically frees what it can without asking, every day, every 3 days or every week. Recent cleanups lists what was freed. Notifications for large cleanups, long actions, and low disk space. Available in the menu bar. No data collectionMacSpace has no analytics, no telemetry, no crash reporting and no account. Measurements, cleanup history and settings stay on your Mac. Free and open source under MIT. Requires macOS 27 on Apple Silicon. The Problem The System Data category in System Settings only shows a total. It doesn't say what's inside, or what's safe to delete. And Apple Intelligence models stay on disk taking ~12 GB even if you don't use it. The Comparison CleanMyMac — Great app, full-featured, but paid subscription and closed source. DaisyDisk — Great for visualizing large files, but doesn't break down System Data and doesn't handle Apple Intelligence. OnyX — Free and long-standing, but exposes low-level tweaks and doesn't guide what's safe to free in System Data. Pearcleaner / AppCleaner — Focused on uninstalling apps, not on System Data, purgeable space or Apple Intelligence. Some more apps fall into this category, but most don't separate what's safe to delete, don't show the Not identified part, or don't switch off Apple Intelligence and delete its models.
