Digger is a dark comedy featuring Tom Cruise as Digger Rockwell, a powerful oil tycoon who wants to save the world from the disaster he caused. People had high hopes for this film, partly because of the director, Alejandro Iñárritu (Birdman, The Revenant), but mainly because of Tom Cruise’s makeup-heavy appearance in the trailers. However, the reviews have not been kind (53 per cent critic rating, 68 per cent audience score). Critics have praised Cruise and Iñárritu for taking a big swing. At least they made a bold attempt at making something distinct, even though they ultimately failed. While the film is beautifully shot, the humour falls completely flat, and the bombastic performances are exhausting.
