Jaden Degiorgio, the son of convicted murderer George Degiorgio, was among eight individuals arrested in connection with a major drug trafficking investigation that resulted in the seizure of more than 28 kilograms of drugs, estimated to have a street value of €3.5 million.According to Times of Malta, the 21-year-old was arrested on 24th September at approximately 3.30pm as part of a series of police operations targeting suspected drug trafficking activities.Degiorgio was subsequently released on police bail while investigators awaited the conclusions of a magisterial inquiry into the substantial drug seizure. He later appeared before Magistrate Lara Lanfranco, where he pleaded not guilty to several charges involving drugs and money laundering.During the court proceedings, defence lawyer Nicholas Mifsud requested bail and presented two witnesses willing to provide financial support for the accused.Paul Tanti, the grandfather of Degiorgio’s girlfriend, agreed to act as a third-party guarantor and submitted bank statements demonstrating his financial position. Degiorgio’s godmother, Mary Rose Carabott, also expressed her willingness to provide financial assistance. The prosecution opposed bail, citing the seriousness of the allegations and ongoing police investigations. However, the defence argued that strict bail conditions would adequately address concerns about possible interference with evidence.Magistrate Lanfranco ultimately granted bail subject to several financial guarantees: A €20,000 third-party guarantee, a €10,000 personal deposit and a €50,000 personal guarantee linked to breaches of bail conditions.Degiorgio must also report to his local police station twice daily, observe a curfew between 9pm and 6am, attend all court hearings and refrain from contacting potential witnesses. He is additionally prohibited from travelling abroad without court authorisation. The case forms part of a wider investigation into suspected organised drug trafficking in Malta.Another individual, Konrad Cassar, was also charged with drug trafficking following his arrest on 24th September.Home Affairs Minister Glenn Bedingfield welcomed the police operation, describing it as another successful disruption of a drug trafficking ring. However, he stressed that the arrests represented only one battle in the broader fight against organised crime.Jaden Degiorgio’s father, George Degiorgio, was convicted for his involvement in the 2017 assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, having admitted his role in planting the explosive device that killed her.Lawyers Nicholas Mifsud and Leslie Cuschieri represented Jaden Degiorgio, while police inspectors John-Leigh Howard and Jonathan Pace led the prosecution, assisted by Maria Francesca Spiteri from the Attorney General’s Office. What do you make of this?•
