Three winners and three losers from Tottenham’s dramatic draw against Man United

Wait 5 sec.

Tottenham Hotspur were left to rue missed opportunities at Old Trafford after failing to make their dominance count, but Dominic Solanke’s stoppage-time equaliser rescued a point when Spurs were down to 10 men. While some players rose to the occasion, others will have plenty to reflect on after a dramatic afternoon against Manchester United. Here are our three winners and three loser from Tottenham’s draw against Manchester United…Credit: @thatfootballphotog / InstagramConor Gallagher looked decent in the Tottenham number 10 roleRoberto De Zerbi confirmed the day before the game that James Maddison had missed a few days of training that week, suggesting the Tottenham head coach was not yet prepared to risk handing him his first Premier League start in 17 months. Asked about his options in the number 10 role (or the lack of them), De Zerbi pointed to Conor Gallagher, claiming the midfielder had been playing well in that position this season. Spurs supporters might have disagreed with that assessment, given Gallagher’s lack of creativity and his underwhelming performances when previously deployed there.Against Man United, however, Gallagher offered a much more convincing display. His pressing was effective, he worked hard to win the ball back and he added an extra touch in build-up play when needed, helping to create space for those around him. There were still moments when a natural number 10 might have made more of the opportunities available. Gallagher managed just one pass into the final third, which goes to say why this is unlikely to be a long-term solution. However, Sandro Tonali complemented him well in midfield, allowing Gallagher to focus on the aspects of his game that worked. He will leave Old Trafford as one of Tottenham’s winners.Savio was a delight to watch againSavio has been a pleasure to watch since arriving at Tottenham, and the Manchester United game was no different. The Brazilian completed the most dribbles of any player on the pitch (5), created the joint-most big chances (1) and recorded the most touches in the opposition box (10). He is also second in the Premier League for dribbles per 90, behind only his Tottenham team-mate on the opposite flank, Mohammed Kudus. There is a feeling that something could happen every time Savio gets the ball. Rather than simply moving possession away from danger, he looks to drive forward, take on his opponent and cut inside to create opportunities for his team. That confidence gives Tottenham an attacking outlet that can trouble even the most organised defences.Dominic Solanke was spared his Tottenham blushesMany Tottenham supporters would have been preparing to criticise Dominic Solanke after what looked set to be a thoroughly frustrating afternoon for the striker. De Zerbi had shown his faith in the England international by handing him the captain’s armband, but Solanke struggled to repay that trust in front of goal, missing chance after chance when Spurs needed someone to deliver.Solanke himself admitted that he ‘could have probably had 3 goals’ by the end of the game. That summed up his afternoon, but he did at least manage to make amends when it mattered most, finding the net with an invaluable stoppage-time equaliser despite Tottenham being a man down. The goal rescued a point and spared Solanke from what would otherwise have been a difficult post-match conversation. More importantly, it should provide a much-needed boost to his confidence. And now for our three losers from the Tottenham defeat…Credit: @thefrederikkejensen / InstagramRodrigo Bentancur was foolish to get himself sent offRodrigo Bentancur has been one of Tottenham’s best midfielders this season, and his absence from the starting XI was understandable given he had travelled halfway around the world during international duty. The Uruguayan was introduced six minutes past the hour mark, but his evening lasted only another 10 minutes before he was shown a straight red card for headbutting Luke Shaw.Shaw had initiated the altercation by pushing Bentancur to the ground, but the Tottenham midfielder should have known better than to react in that manner. His decision left Spurs with 10 men and completely changed the complexion of the game. Tottenham had been dominating their opponents, but that advantage disappeared once they were reduced to 10 players.Had Solanke not rescued a point in stoppage time, De Zerbi’s comments about Bentancur after the match might have sounded rather different. The Italian joked that he ‘kissed him’ after the game, but the midfielder had given his manager plenty of reason to be frustrated. Spurs could well have left Old Trafford with all three points had they maintained their numerical advantage. The red card also means Bentancur will miss Tottenham’s next three fixtures. Spurs will not see him back in action until 7 November, when they face Leeds United, leaving De Zerbi with an important decision to make in midfield.Jan Paul Van Hecke cannot shake off his poor run of formJan Paul Van Hecke came under criticism following Tottenham’s 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa before the international break, having looked shaky at the back. The Dutchman then faced further scrutiny during the break itself after a disappointing display against Germany. He returned to Tottenham midway through the international window because of a foot injury, but recovered in time to start against Manchester United alongside Marcos Senesi at the back.Unfortunately, the defender could not put his recent struggles behind him. Van Hecke was at fault for Bryan Mbeumo’s opening goal, allowing the United forward far too much space to turn inside the box before shooting into the far corner beyond Antonin Kinsky. Van Hecke still had a decent game overall, but his lapses in concentration are becoming too frequent. A defender can have a largely solid afternoon and still cost his team dearly through one poor decision, and that is becoming an issue for the Dutchman.Mateus Fernandes could not convince De Zerbi to give him a starting spotRoberto De Zerbi praised Mateus Fernandes as ‘one of the best’ players in his squad the day before the game, but the midfielder was still unable to force his way into the starting XI ahead of Lucas Bergvall, Sandro Tonali and Conor Gallagher. More concerningly, Fernandes was only introduced into the game when there were barely two minutes of normal time remaining. The Portuguese midfielder has arguably been made to look worse this season by being used in a number 10 role that does not suit his strengths. Judging him on those performances alone would be harsh, given he is more naturally suited to operating from a deeper position – the number eight. With Bentancur now suspended for Tottenham’s next three fixtures, Fernandes has an opportunity to make his case for a regular starting spot in his preferred role.READ MORE: Four strange things we noticed about Tottenham’s squad va Man United that you may have missed – Spurs WebThe post Three winners and three losers from Tottenham’s dramatic draw against Man United appeared first on Spurs Web.
