Feeling blindsided after orientation meeting and don't know what to do

Wait 5 sec.

I had an orientation meeting with my supervisor the other day that I felt completely blindsided by and can't shake. I started nursing in 2017 and am coming back from a hiatus due to personal traumas. I chose to start in a specialty that is new to me and thought things had been going really well. I apparently made the mistake of opening up to my 2 preceptors about my past and now word has spread and the story is twisted and people are "concerned." My supervisor wants me "to be honest" with myself "if this job is too much." I was absolutely dumbfounded and became super dysregulated which doesn't look great for me. Prior to this, I have had nothing but positive feedback. I am angry and disappointed that one or both of the people I need to be able to trust as my preceptors have gossiped about the reasons for my hiatus. At this point, I've only had 7 shifts and have only had time for brief introductions with most of the nursing staff. They don't know me yet. I truly don't know what has given any one the impression that I'm struggling. It's a tough job but it's no ICU and I have experience as an ICU RN. I have been excited to come to work most days and enjoying the work. It felt nice for a while to not dread coming to the unit. I have been learning a lot and I have expressed all of this to my preceptors many, many times. I have barely talked about my past outside of my nursing experiences when asked. My supervisor expressed that I don't need to convince her but by her bringing it up, there's obviously some level of doubt if I'm mentally capable. I can't stand that; especially when it's worded as "concern." This wasn't the only negative feedback that I felt blindsided by. I really don't know if I should address this with my supervisor and/or preceptors or just keep pushing forward. My confidence in my preceptors has definitely diminished. What a bummer. Shame on me for trying to bond, I guess. I know now that I need to stay private. submitted by /u/qween_elizabeth [link] [comments]
