Espanyol director of football Monchi has reacted to the speculation linking Roberto Fernandez to Tottenham Hotspur and other Premier League clubs. It has been widely reported that Spurs are scouring the market for a new number nine ahead of the January window, and the Spanish striker has caught the club’s eye with his outstanding start to the season.Fernandez has scored six times in seven matches so far this term for Espanyol, and that form has seen him break into the Spanish side, with Luis de la Fuente handing the striker his first cap in his side’s 3-1 victory over Czechia.Spurs Web relayed last week that the 24-year-old has shot to the top of Tottenham’s wishlist, with scouts from the North London club impressed by the centre-forward’s displays this season.Photo by Jose Manuel Alvarez Rey/Getty ImagesTottenham target Roberto Fernandez told to stay at Espanyol to improve international prospectsThe report from TEAMtalk suggested that scouts from Spurs and other Premier League clubs feel that Fernández’s physical attributes make him well suited to English football.Monchi has now revealed he is not losing any sleep over losing the centre-forward, even though he has a €30m (£25.4m) release clause in his contract. However, the Espanyol director made the case to the striker that he would stand a better chance of becoming a regular for Spain if he stays at the La Liga club and starts regularly. When asked about the speculation over Fernandez’s future, Monchi told Sport: “I don’t know what might happen or what other clubs might be thinking. I think he knows that playing for Espanyol brings him closer to the national team. He gets more consistent playing time here.“But, well, if someone comes along and pays the release clause and he wants to leave, then we’ll have to look for solutions in the transfer market. But I believe that, as of today, he and the people around him are satisfied—they’re happy here. And Roberto is young.“If he keeps scoring goals, he’ll always have opportunities in the transfer market. But it’s not something that keeps me up at night. Obviously, it’s something I’m attending to and concerned about. But I’m not sitting here thinking, ‘Oh, they’re going to come, pay the €30m, and take him away.’ I want to focus on Roberto continuing to score goals.”Two other Premier League clubs also want FernandezSpurs are not the only English club circling over the player, with reports indicating that Chelsea and Brighton are also fans of the Espanyol star. The fact that his release clause is only worth around £25m would undoubtedly make him an attractive option for several Premier League clubs. One would expect the queue of interested clubs to grow larger ahead of the January window if the 24-year-old continues his rich vein of form over the next few weeks.READ MORE: Barcelona want to poach Pedro Porro from Tottenham and Chelsea could help themThe post Tottenham want £25m Roberto Fernandez as Espanyol director confirms release clause appeared first on Spurs Web.
