Malta recorded one of the lowest shares of people unable to cover an unexpected financial expense in the EU in 2025, according to figures published by Eurostat.Eurostat’s latest figures put Malta at 18.7%, meaning fewer than one in five people living in private households reported being unable to face an unexpected expense. This places Malta joint second-lowest in the EU alongside Czechia, according to Eurostat’s latest published graphic, with only the Netherlands recording a lower share at 15.3%.Malta’s figure also sits significantly below the EU average of 29.2%, where almost three in every 10 people reported being unable to handle an unexpected financial expense. At the opposite end of the scale, Greece recorded the highest share at 50.5%, followed by Latvia at 43.7% and Bulgaria at 42.4%.The indicator is designed to measure households’ capacity to deal with an unforeseen financial cost. It should not, however, be interpreted as showing how many people have savings, since being able to meet an unexpected expense can depend on other financial resources.Eurostat’s accompanying 2026 publication displays slightly different figures for some countries, including Malta, meaning the latest graphic appears to reflect revised data.•
