The Premier League returns this weekend with all 10 of the most expensive summer signings expected to be on show.It was a record window for English top-flight clubs, with spending reaching £3.49bn – £506.5m of which came on deadline day alone.Fernandez has become the first player in football history to move for more than £100m twiceGettyThree of the 10 most expensive signings in football history came this summer, with four teams completing nine-figure deals. Some of those players have hit the ground running at their new clubs, while others have endured much more frustrating starts. With that in mind, talkSPORT’s Rory Jennings has run the rule over 10 of the most expensive Premier League summer signings. For reference, Carlos Baleba has been omitted, having not made his competitive Manchester United debut since his £70million arrival.Enzo Fernandez – Chelsea to Man City, £125mThe Argentine completed a record-equalling switch to the Etihad on deadline day to rejoin his former Blues boss Enzo Maresca. He has since made three Premier League appearances for his new club to help City continue their perfect 100 per cent winning streak.Fernandez started both of the club’s 1-0 victories over Coventry and Man United (the latter of which came amid the backdrop of Phil Foden’s early red card) and got off the mark in the 5-3 win against Sunderland before the break.“It’s painful for me because there is literally nothing I like about Enzo Fernandez,” Jennings exclusively told talkSPORT.com.“He’s a player that I detest on so many levels. He’s a player that I didn’t like when he was at Chelsea.“He was a player that really got under my skin when he was representing Argentina,” Jennings continued on Fernandez. “And I’m so glad that he’s out of Chelsea.Fernandez left Chelsea for Man City in a record-equalling Premier League deal on transfer deadline dayPA“But if I’m ranking the start that he’s had at Manchester City, I feel like it’s almost perfect. You look at his performance against Man United.“You look at the impact that he had in that game, the way that he was fighting tooth and nail for every single minute of every single moment of that match. “He totally embraced the fact that it was a Manchester derby and really, really committed to everything about that. “You look at the goal that he scored against Sunderland. It’s a 10 out of 10 start for Enzo Fernandez. “I desperately hope that it doesn’t continue, but it is a 10 out of 10 start.”Rory’s rating: 10/10His first Premier League goal for City helped cement their spot at the top of the tableGettyMorgan Rogers – Aston Villa to Chelsea, £117mThe England international joined the Blues in a £117million deal, making him the most expensive British player in history. The 24-year-old has raced out of the blocks for Chelsea, with three goals and an assist in their first five Premier League matches. He has already netted away to reigning champions Arsenal at the Emirates, and masterminded Chelsea’s 6-3 comeback win over rivals Leeds in the Carabao Cup last month.“Morgan Rogers has been sublime,” Jennings added.“I love him. I love everything about him. He’s scored big goals. He’s brave. He takes people on. He has a great link-up with Cole Palmer.Rogers has reignited his partnership with close friend and former Man City academy teammate Palmer in west LondonGetty“Our forward line is excellent. We will score enough goals to win the Premier League. “To borrow a phrase from Jason Cundy, we’ll also concede enough to go down. But we will score enough, and Rogers is so integral to that.“You look at his performance against Leeds in the Cup. Morgan Rogers turned that game on his head. “I’m giving him a 10. I think he’s been brilliant. I really do.“He’s been like a duck to water at Stamford Bridge and long may it continue.”Rory’s rating: 10/10Palmer and Rogers have become a go-to attacking pair at ChelseaGettyElliot Anderson – Nottingham Forest to Man City, £116mRogers’ England teammate briefly held the mantle of the most expensive British transfer when he made his move to the Etihad.Anderson has been ever-present in all five of Man City’s five Premier League games that have them top of the table at present.“He’s too good,” Jennings stressed to talkSPORT. “He’s too good. It’s so annoying that he went there. He’s so good.“Do you know what I always think when I think of Elliot Anderson? How must the Newcastle fan feel about this? “You know all the noise about Man City was going on. Elliot Anderson was playing for Newcastle. Like what on earth? Anderson had been on Man United’s wish list but opted to join City in a £116m dealGetty“Imagine what their side could have been if it wasn’t for the restrictions. I just think that he is a perfect midfielder. “I’d love him at Chelsea. He’s just got everything, hasn’t he? And the form during the World Cup, he was unstoppable. “I loved him in an England shirt, and again I think he’s getting it so right with Man City. “I thought they’d really struggle in midfield without Rodri. But Elliot Anderson has made it a seamless transition. “10 out of 10 for him as well.”Rory’s rating: 10/10Anderson has made a seamless transition to City’s midfield since leaving ForestGettyBradley Barcola – Paris Saint-Germain to Liverpool, £106mThe Reds agreed to pay an initial £106m, rising to £123m, to bring the Frenchman to Anfield towards the end of the summer window. The cards were stacked against Barcola to make a fast start to life in England, with no pre-season or competitive matches under his belt after being frozen out by PSG due to the speculation over his future. He played 31 minutes in his Premier League debut on matchday three to help Liverpool secure their first top-flight win of the season.Barcola was handed starts in the goalless draw with Fulham and the 1-0 victory over Bournemouth, but is without a goal contribution in five appearances thus far – having also featured in both the Champions League and Carabao Cup.Jennings said: “It’s certainly not a 10 yet. But he’s also finding his feet. Not only is he in a new league, but it’s a new manager.Barcola is expected to take Liverpool’s attack to a whole new levelGetty“It’s a difficult start. What we know about Barcola is he’s too good to fail. He’s too good for this not to work. “And you know when you hear the Liverpool fans doing the Maxi Rodriguez song for him, you just know that it’s something that’s going to be sung loudly, consistently, and off the back of a load of success.“It’s certainly not a 10 yet. It’s no goals, no assists. It can’t be. But he contributed massively in that debut at Portman Road.“And I think he’s such a good player. I really wanted [Chelsea] to sign him. I think he’s a class act. Yet, it’s nowhere near that.“It’s probably a 6 or 7. I’d give him a 7. But in terms of where he goes, at the end of the season, we’re giving Barcola a 10; I’m sure of that.”Rory’s rating: 7/10Barcola impressed on his Champions League debut for Liverpool before he was forced off with crampGettySandro Tonali – Newcastle to Tottenham, £92.5mThe 26-year-old swapped Tyneside for north London earlier this summer in a £92.5m plus £7.5m in achievable add-ons deal – becoming Spurs’ club-record signing in the process.Yet the Italian has endured a horror start at Spurs, who sit bottom of the Premier League after accumulating just two points.Tonali is yet to win in a Tottenham shirt, having missed both of their Carabao Cup fixtures through injury, and he is without a single goal contribution in any of his five top-flight outings.“It’s been bad, hasn’t it, for Tonali? Jennings stated. “All the stuff that he’s meant to be really good at, that hustling, that aggression, that power, just doesn’t seem to be there.“And I thought linking up with De Zerbi was going to really be quite easy for him to just find his form again.Tonali was the marquee summer signing at Hotspur WayTottenham Hotspur FC“He’s got a great relationship with De Zerbi. De Zerbi wanted him. He’s played in the Premier League. He’s moved to London.“It felt like such a good signing for Tottenham. It felt like the perfect signing for them. And it hasn’t worked, I don’t think.“I’m not going to go too drastic with Tonali because I feel like I could make a 20-point list of what’s going wrong at Tottenham and not talk about Tonali. I’ll give him a five. “I think, again, similar to what I said about Barcola, Sandro Tonali is too good to fail. “I’ll give him a five out of 10 so far, but he’s got to step it up.”Rory’s rating: 5/10Tonali, among most of the new Tottenham signings, has had a slow startGettyMateus Fernandes – West Ham to Tottenham, £85mFernandes has made five Premier League appearances for Spurs since joining from relegated West Ham, two of those off the bench.“I was surprised. I was surprised. I expected a bit more from Fernandes. It really hasn’t been good enough so far. “I don’t think he’s been as good as Tonali. I’m going to give him a four out of 10.”Rory’s rating: 4/10Ayyoub Bouaddi – Lille to Man City, £81.4mThe 22-year-old lit up the World Cup and joined City a few days before transfer deadline day.“He’s not that yet [the level of Anderson and Fernandez]. You’ve got to be patient with Bouaddi.“Equally, when you think about that midfield, if that midfield is Bouaddi, Anderson, [Rayan] Cherki, for example, that’s a European cup-winning midfield, isn’t it? That is such a solid midfield.“Such a brilliant pairing. Bouaddi will come good, no doubt about it. I think he’s started fairly well as well. I’d give him a seven.”Rory’s rating: 7/10Bouaddi became the Premier League’s most expensive teenager when he joined from LilleGettyBruno Guimaraes – Newcastle to Arsenal, £75mThe Brazilian midfielder completed a £75m move to the Gunners in August and instantly lifted the Community Shield on his debut.Injury ruled him out of Arsenal’s Premier League opener, but Guimaraes has played in three of the club’s five fixtures so far.The highlight of which is undoubtedly his stunner against Sunderland that won the Emirates Goal of the Month award for September.Jennings said: “It doesn’t happen often in football where you can just sign someone, and there’s basically no jeopardy. “You just know you’re signing the right player. You’re signing somebody that is proven, ready.Bruno Guimaraes was Arsenal’s marquee signing this summerGetty“He was playing for Brazil at the World Cup, and he’s proven in the Premier League, he’s played Champions League football, he’s won silverware in this country. It was the perfect signing. “When you score a winner, you’re playing away at a ground where you are detested, and then you ping in a winner of that quality.“That is football. That is everything that you want. It’s tenacity, it’s spirit, it’s aggression, it’s having that needle, it’s just being the perfect footballer. “To pop up with a winner in those circumstances, that’s the kind of geezer that you want in the trenches with you. “It’s a perfect signing for Arsenal. I’m going to give him a ten!”Rory’s rating: 10/10Bruno Guimaraes scored one of the goals of the season to help down Sunderland, the arch rivals of his old club NewcastleGettySavio – Man City to Tottenham, £75m“I think it’s been so average. I don’t want to go too harsh on Savio [fka Savinho], because it’s the set-up; it’s everything around. “When you’re playing for a failing club, it’s tough. But he came in for a lot of money; the expectations were big.“£75m, so much money for a player that got two goals. It’s probably a four at best, isn’t it?”Rory’s rating: 4/10Jeremy Jacquet – Rennes to Liverpool, £55m“You look at the form of Van Dijk, you look at the clean sheets at Liverpool, a lot of it, I think, can be tied to finding the solution, finding that partner.“Over the years, there was a period where Konate was very good, a period where Van Dijk and Joe Gomez had a bromance going on; they played very well together. “But he hasn’t had that [level of partner], Van Dijk. Jacquet has been a revelation for the Reds since arriving at the club this summerGetty“And suddenly, Jacquet’s come in and they’re not conceding goals, and they’re looking like a serious unit at the back.“I think, again, this signing has to be top tier. How can it not be a ten?“If we’re giving out tens, how can bringing in Jacquet to this effect not be a ten?”Rory’s rating: 10/10
