Tottenham’s highest-rated XI this season revealed, and it’s far from De Zerbi’s strongest

Wait 5 sec.

We have taken Tottenham’s highest-rated players so far this season, according to FotMob, to see how close that XI is to Roberto De Zerbi’s strongest possible side.Almost £400m was spent in the summer to replace around half of the starting XI, but Tottenham still find themselves in the same lowly Premier League position as last season, sitting 20th after collecting just two points from their opening five games. That is not necessarily a criticism of Spurs’ summer business. Tottenham have undoubtedly upgraded the quality of the football and brought in some brilliant individual players, but football is a team game, and those qualities have not yet translated into a fully functioning side on the pitch.Another argument is that De Zerbi has not yet had the luxury of fielding his strongest XI because Tottenham have dealt with several injury/fitness issues this season. For example, the Italian has plenty of players in his squad capable of operating in the No.10 position (James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Xavi Simons, Mohammed Kudus) but not a single one has started a game there so far.A total of 19 players have featured for Tottenham in the Premier League this season, so here is the highest-rated player in each position based on their average FotMob rating across the opening five games.Credit: @reclusemedia / InstagramTottenham’s highest-rated XI according to FotMobAntonin Kinsky: 6.54Archie Gray: 6.66Jan Paul Van Hecke: 7.30Micky Van de Ven: 6.93Andy Robertson: 6.82Rodrigo Bentancur: 6.70Sandro Tonali: 6.92Mateus Fernandes: 6.75Mohammed Kudus: 6.97Omar Marmoush: 6.50Savio: 7.23While it is a decent XI, it is not necessarily the strongest one De Zerbi could have at his disposal.Tottenham should receive a few significant boosts in the coming weeks as Pedro Porro, Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison and Destiny Udogie are integrated back into the starting squad following their injuries or fitness troubles. So, when/if De Zerbi eventually has a fully fit squad available to him, what would Spurs’ best XI look like? What would Tottenham’s strongest XI look like with no injuries?Starting with the full-backs, Porro and Udogie would likely come back into the side. Gray and Robertson would not have started as many games as they have this season if Porro and Udogie had been fit from the beginning.Gray is not a natural right-back, so it would be unfair to compare him with a World Cup winner like Porro, who is one of the finest players in the position at the moment. On the other flank, Udogie has looked much better than Robertson in the limited minutes we have seen from him, for example, against Liverpool in the 3-1 Carabao Cup defeat last month. Robertson is the better crosser without doubt, but Udogie is the more suited dynamic and fluid fullback De Zerbi will want when his side are building up from the back. There is still no No.10 in the highest-rated XI above, but that should change when De Zerbi eventually has the services of quality playmakers in Maddison and Kulusevski. It is difficult to say exactly who they would replace. Bentancur has arguably been Spurs’ best player this season, Fernandes has been playing in an unfamiliar No.10 role for much of the campaign, while Tonali is a world-class midfielder. There should therefore be plenty of rotation in those positions, but Maddison or Kulusevski would certainly get into Tottenham’s strongest XI.Up front, there is perhaps an unpopular argument for Dominic Solanke to come in for Marmoush simply because he is the more natural No.9 and should eventually shake off his poor form. That is not necessarily a long shot either, because, even if Marmoush has been miles better than Solanke this season, he too has not scored goals.READ MORE: Exclusive: Destiny Udogie needs one thing to become best left-back in England, says Pascal Chimbonda – Spurs WebThe post Tottenham’s highest-rated XI this season revealed, and it’s far from De Zerbi’s strongest appeared first on Spurs Web.
