Coolmore Strikes at Tattersalls for 4m Gns Frankel Colt from Newsells Park

By Brian Sheerin and Emma BerryNEWMARKET, UK — Julian Dollar knows a thing or two about excelling at Book 1, so when he says that a certain yearling is the best that Newsells Park Stud has ever brought to auction then it is worth taking note. The colt in question is by Frankel and has the extra benefit of being a full-brother to Group 1 winner Ylang Ylang. His May 13 birthday was no barrier to sales-ring success either, as the elegant son of Shambolic (Shamardal) sashayed around the straw until Alastair Pim dropped his gavel at 4 million gns.Anthony Stroud and Sheikh Mohammed threw in a couple of bids from outside the ring, while Kia Joorabchian was also in play from the bidders' section and an unidentified underbidder got involved online. In the end though, it was MV Magnier who was in the hotseat when the music stopped, ensuring that lot 237 would be following his elder sister – the winner of the G1 Fillies' Mile on this weekend three years ago – to Ballydoyle.“In fairness to Newsells, they do a great job,” Magnier said. “They have bred a lot of good horses and we bought his sister off them a few years ago. She's a very good filly and is in foal to Justify. Aidan [O'Brien] and Dad [John] were here the other day and they liked him a lot.”Shambolic, who is owned by Newsells Park's Graham Smith-Bernal in partnership with Craig Bennett of Merry Fox Stud, had multiple black-type placings in her racing days for the Dukes of Devonshire and Roxburghe, and she is a half-sister to the Hong Kong champion Viva Pataca. The Frankel colt is the third of her yearlings to bring a seven-figure return at Book 1: Ylang Ylang sold for 1.5 million gns, while Group 3-placed three-year-old Act Of Kindness (Siyouni) sold for 3.7 million gns to Godolphin.“I thought he might even make more than that,” said Smith-Bernal after the yearling became his mother's most expensive offspring yet.“You know, when you have your stud manager, who's been there for 20 years, describe the horse as the finest horse he's ever produced for the sale, no exaggeration, born on the 13th of May, then you have Juddmonte, who's visited him a couple of times, saying he is the spitting image of Frankel.”He continued, “For me, it was his temperament that was so special. From being weaned, he was always a horse more interested in interacting with humans rather than other horses. He led the pack, and you'd click your fingers, he'd come walking over from 400 yards away, and there he was. You could see he wanted to know what you were all about, and so he was very special.“He vetted very well, he moves very well, and he looks like Frankel. Hopefully, if he's 10% of what Frankel is, they would have done quite well. I wish them all the best.”Craig Bennett added, “It's 20 years since we started the business. We were joint-top buyer in 2006 and top on our own in 2007. We're not quite top here, but we're not far off 20 years later. There aren't many people that can say that. That's the real pride. To earn the respect of the industry through what you produce. So I'm over the moon.”Frankel is currently at the head of the Book 1 sires' table with 12 yearlings sold at an average of 992,917gns, while his son and fellow Banstead Manor resident Chaldean is leading the first-season sires. His seven yearlings sold over the last two days have achieved an average price of 181,429gns.Those figures have helped to contribute to solid figures across the board at Tattersalls. Another 42,625,000gns was added to the aggregate on Wednesday from the sale of 120 yearlings for a clearance rate of 85%. The median was up by 2% at 220,000gns and the average up 1% at 355,208gns.Book 1 is well on course to exceed last year's tally of 16 seven-figure lots with 13 in the bag already. Strike two for Marlhill House with JustifyIf Tuesday was Godolphin's day to dominate, by Wednesday their key rivals Coolmore stepped into the hotseat to sign for the top two lots of the session in partnership with Peter Brant's White Birch Farm. That included Marlhill House Stud's colt by Justify (lot 260), who brought 1.6 millions gns and was the second big result that Eddie Irwin's operation has enjoyed with the same stallion this yearling season.Marhill House Stud's manager Brian McConnon said, “We've been blessed. We had three colts [by Justify] to sell and I knew at the start of the year we had three nice colts, but until you get them to the sale, you don't know how it will go. We decided we'd split the three of them up, so we sent one to France, one to Goffs and then one here.”At Arqana, through the Fairway Consignment, they sold a son of Joie De Soir (Fastnet Rock) for €1.25m, while the Tattersalls colt is out of Stars At Night (Galileo) and thus bred on the same cross as City Of Troy. His half-brother Poker Face (Fastnet Rock) won the G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein and G2 Zabeel Mile for owner Ed Ware, while that horse's full-sister Star Devine is a Grade 3 winner in America.Irwin said, “We bought the dam here in 2016 because I was looking for a Galileo mare at the time. I was involved in the racing of Fastnet Rock and I was involved with him when he went to stud as well. The cross with Galileo mares was working really well. And then, when Fastnet Rock came to the end of his stallion career, we were saying, 'Where do we go next?' We had always just stayed with the cross, really. We sent her over to the States to be covered by Justify. The one from last year has turned out well so it's good.”Last year's colt is now known as Hmas Perth, of whom buyer MV Magnier said, “Aidan [O'Brien] thinks that the brother is definitely a Group horse. Justify is going very well so we're delighted to get him.”Ace backs Amo coltYuesheng Zhang has been present at Tattersalls over the last few days and, sitting alongside his son-in-law Harris Li, the official owner of Ace Stud, the outfit went to 1.6 million gns to secure a Night Of Thunder colt from New England Stud. Lot 276 is from a family that the owners know well given Ace Stud spent 600,000gns on the sister, the Listed-winning Town And Country (Earthlight), at the December Mares Sale last year. The Night Of Thunder colt is out of Sweety Dream (Dream Ahead) and was bred by Amo Racing. The mare's other offspring include the yearling's full-sister Romantic Style, who won the G3 Prix Imprudence for Godolphin.Ace Stud's Paul Curran said, “He was the standout for us all week and we went to see him on Sunday – we were in the market to buy a nice one by the sire. He is from a good farm, we liked everything about him.“There is a premium on the Night Of Thunders. The price was around what we thought we'd have to spend. He will go to Andrew Balding – he has had great success for us with Night Of Thunder and had Gewan for us and he won the Dewhurst this time last year. We hope we will have a nice one again with Andrew. This is a later sort, but we will be in good hands with Andrew.”Different day, same storyGodolphin and Night Of Thunder. It's a partnership which has endured, and another colt by the champion sire was added to the royal blue haul on Tuesday when Anthony Stroud bid 1.5 million gns for lot 189, the second foal of Purple Ribbon (Gleneagles) from Hascombe & Valiant Studs.“We've had the family for generations,” said breeder Anthony Oppenheimer of the dynasty which includes great granddam Victoria Cross (Mark Of Esteem), whose offspring Bronze Cannon and Across The Stars are both Group 2 winners while another, Grade 3 winner Valiant Girl, is the dam of this year's G1 Belmont Derby winner Title Role (Too Darn Hot).“Title Role was very good this year – he won a Group 1, a Group 2 and a Group 3. He's not doing too badly. We had high expectations, I'm afraid. We would have been very disappointed if he did not sell well,” Oppenheimer said, adding that Purple Ribbon now has a Study Of Man foal at foot.Godolphin's spending spree on the second day of Book 1 included lot 298, a Blue Point colt out of the Listed Chelmer Stakes winner Tippy Toes, bought from Newsells Park Stud for 950,000gns.The colt had been pinhooked as a foal by mystery entity Vista Bloodstock from breeders Colin and Melba Bryce of Laundry Cottage Stud for 250,000gns.By the end of the second session, another seven yearlings had been added to those bought by Godolphin on the first day, taking the total to 18 horses purchased for 20.86 million gns.'Lucky' Cox dines out on Kingman coltAnother from that shopping list was a colt which helped Baroda Stud boss David Cox to produce one of the pinhooking results of the sale when selling the son of Kingman for 1.1 million gns – and apparently he has the stud's Noel McDonnell to thank for allowing him take a piece in the first place!Offered by Baroda at the December Foal Sale, the Kingman colt was shrewdly purchased by a group – including McDonnell – for 155,000gns under the banner of Auburn Bloodstock. That outlay looked a snip shortly after 4pm on Wednesday when Godolphin out-battled some serious bidders, including Amo Racing's Kia Joorabchian on the colt. A delighted Cox said, “Kia was very lucky with the family so he loved him as well. Sheikh Mohammed came to see him yesterday so we were hoping he would stay on the big lists. It's great for our whole team. Noel McDonnell, who works for me, bought him as a foal. We had him at the foal sales here and I really liked him so, when he came to me afterwards telling me he bought him, I was delighted to take a piece. It worked out great. He has a huge pedigree and these are the types of pinhooks that can go the right way. He is by the right sire and he is a nice horse. I was just lucky that I got the call to buy into him.”Asked how he felt pinhookers had been performing all year, Cox added, “It's been tough. The O'Callaghans [Yeomanstown Stud] got the touch yesterday with the Ghaiyyath colt making 1.3 million gns but it has been tough. I can't complain anyway.”Swirral Edge delivers again for RedpenderSometimes you've got to think on your feet in this game. That's exactly what Paddy Twomey did to land the Frankel sister to G1 July Cup winner Mill Stream (Gleneagles) when amalgamating a group of existing owners, headed by Bond Thoroughbreds, to go to 1.5 million gns on Jimmy Murphy's filly. That outlay represents the largest sum that Twomey has ever paid at public auction and tips his overall haul this week beyond 2.7 million gns on five well-bred yearlings. Twomey said, “This is the premier yearling sale in Europe. We came here hoping to buy some nice stock and, luckily enough, we've been able to buy some of the ones that were on our list. It's a competitive marketplace but we want to compete at a high level. I've never spent that sort of money on a yearling before. She has been bought on behalf of a new partnership of existing owners, which is quite exciting. Hopefully she'll be lucky now. She is a collector's item and is an exciting racing prospect who will hopefully be a foundation broodmare.”He added, “A lot of kudos has to go to Jimmy Murphy. He's after breeding three very fast horses out of the mare and it's a pedigree I know well. She's a credit to Jimmy Murphy and is a culmination of his lifetime of hard work. He is a man I have incredible respect for and we're delighted to be able to take her home. She could be a very important foundation broodmare for this new partnership and we are very excited to have her.”Mill Stream is not the only black-type winner for his dam Swirral Edge (Hellvelyn), who has been a wonder for Murphy's Redpender Stud. The 13-year-old mare is also the dam of G2 Richmond Stakes winner Asymmetric (Showcasing), while this year's two-year-old Crownbreaker, from the first crop of Minzaal, won the Listed Prix Yacowlef and was second in the G2 Flying Childers Stakes for Amo Racing and Kevin Philippart de Foy. Wild about the wild cardThe Frankel filly out of G2 Middleton Stakes winner Queen Power may have been a late addition to the catalogue as lot 196A, but she caught the eye of both Richard Brown and his underbidder Simon Mockridge of Juddmonte, ultimately selling for 1.4 million gns.“She had everything: sire, pedigree, the farm she was raised on, beautiful physical, and she looked exceptional walking round there. She had everything you want, and the depth of the page there is quite exceptional. We very much hope she's a racehorse but there's a long-term future there as well.”From the family of Serena's Sister, which includes new Juddmonte stallion Field Of Gold and his fellow Group 1 winners Zabeel Prince and Rizeena, the filly was consigned by Whatton Manor Stud.“We knew coming here we had a very special filly, but there's so many hoops they've got to get through. She did that and we are delighted with the result,” said Whatton Manor's Ed Player.“She was popular here, lots of people vetted her, and it was lovely that they all came in the ring. You can never be 100 per cent sure who will follow in but to have two very good operators Juddmonte and Richard Brown fighting out for it at the end was just the stuff of dreams. Whoever gets to train her has got a nice filly, and I'm convinced she will be a racehorse.”Thoroughbred Racing Corporation's big-race richesFresh from a Group 1 double with Green Empress (Saxon Warrior) and Miss Scott (Night Of Thunder) at ParisLongchamp on Sunday, The Thoroughbred Racing Corporation reinvested to the tune of 925,000gns on a Dubawi filly from WH Bloodstock. The Dubawi filly is out G1 Prix Vermeille winner Sweet Lady (Lope De Vega) and Jane Mangan, who buys on behalf of Prince Faisal bin Ahmed's operation, said her purchase was the opposite of “rocket science.”Mangan said, “She's by one of the great stallions of our time, and she's out of a Group 1-winning mare. We saw her three times and she showed very well. Prince Faisal bin Ahmed watched the videos from home and we were very keen.”She added, “We don't buy quantity, we try to buy quality, which everyone does. We knew she would be expensive and we are delighted to get her. We come in here with our feet on the ground and we came in with the same modus operandi as we've always done, and these are the fillies that we want to breed from in the future.”The post Coolmore Strikes at Tattersalls for 4m Gns Frankel Colt from Newsells Park appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
