Plymouth manager Tom Cleverley has defended Russell Martin after a video went viral of a heated discussion with a Leicester fan.The Foxes boss was confronted by a supporter after the Foxes’ defeat to Stevenage in the Jersey Mike’s Trophy on Tuesday.Russell has won just two of his seven League One games in charge of LeicesterGettyThe fan told Martin that he travelled from Exeter to watch the performance and urged the manager to play a more exciting style of play.He said: “Russell, I’ve come from Exeter to watch this, I go everywhere to watch this club. I want you to succeed, but don’t play the football the owners want you to play, play the football that we want you to play. We’re not giving you personal abuse…”The former Rangers manager rejected those claims and said the criticism had become personal.“We’ve had 135 shots in five games, that is attacking football,” the Leicester manager responded.Martin has come under fire after a difficult start to the season which sees Leicester 14th in League One.View Tweet: https://t.co/2IgEZ22xzcThe discussion touched on Enzo Maresca‘s time at the club, with Martin pointing out the Italian achieved promotion with the Foxes and was still criticised at times.Martin defended the ex-manager, and said: “You got promoted with Enzo, by the way, and you’ve been s*** since then. “You got promoted with 96 points. What more do you want? Because you had Gary Rowett, you had Marti Cifuentes, Ruud van Nistelrooy.“We’ve had more shots in five games than you’ve had in 10/15 last season, I don’t know what you want. We’ll win and when we win, we’ll be fine and you’ll enjoy it. I appreciate the support.”The Leicester boss finished the exchange by thanking the supporters for their backing of the team.Cleverley defends MartinCleverley defended Martin’s honesty on talkSPORT Breakfast, and said: “It’s a really difficult situation.“You don’t want to be rude to the fans, you want to try and connect with them and voice your opinions and have a good conversation instead of just head down, walk on the bus.“That’s another thing that players and managers get criticised for.“So, to see it recorded and then plastered about is disappointing, but it’s the world we live in, the modern day social media.“I thought Russell handled the situation well and I think a lot of us at the top end of the league are expecting Leicester to click into gear sooner rather than later.“They’ll be a force come the end of the season.”Cleverley has led Plymouth to the top of League One, level on points with Bradford City. The Pilgrims struggled at the start of the season and even lost 2-0 to Martin’s Leicester City.Cleverly also went through a similar thing to Martin, with Plymouth having to issue a statement defending him only four months into his tenureShutterstock EditorialHowever, they managed to find some form and have won four of their last five league games.Meanwhile, the 2015/16 Premier League champions have only managed to win two games out of seven so far this season.
