On the 12th of October 1996, a 20 year old Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima (R9) scored a vintage solo goal against Compostela in La Liga for Barcelona FC. His goal left his coach, Sir Bobby Robson, lift his hands to his head in utter disbelief. Ronaldo stayed at Barcelona for only one season but scored 47 goals in 49 matches and he ended his campaign as the top scorer in La Liga with 34 goals. His total wasn’t matched by any Barcelona player until the arrival of Lionel Messi in the 2009/2010 season. After a failed renewal of his contract with Barcelona Inter Milan signed him for a then world record fee of 27.9$ million. Inter initially paid about $26.1 million in order to trigger the buyout clause in his contract. However, following a dispute between the clubs, a FIFA committee ordered Inter to pay an additional US$1.8 million, bringing the final total to US$27.9 million (approximately £19.5 million/€27 million at the time). Dubbed as The Phenomenon, he remains to be one of the greatest players of all time to this day. submitted by /u/qwdicp [link] [comments]
