AMO Racing, Two Eight Racing and Wesley Ward's Outfielder (Speightstown) looked to have it all to do a quarter mile from home in a stakes-quality, age-restricted allowance Thursday at Keeneland, but took flight in the final furlong to peg back long-time leader Throckmorton (Caracaro) in the dying strides for an eye-catching success.Named a 'TDN Rising Star' following a blowout debut victory at this venue in April 2025, the bay colt atoned for a disappointing effort in last year's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf with victories in the Animal Kingdom Stakes over the Turfway synthetic Mar. 21 followed by a handy score in Churchill's William Walker Stakes May 9. Tenth, beaten just under a half-dozen lengths in the G1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot June 19, Outfielder was an even fourth as the odds-on pop in the GIII Mahony Stakes at Saratoga and was adding Lasix for just the second allowance try of his career. The stakes-winning Throckmorton, third in the Walker and a neck second in the GIII Quick Call Stakes this term, won the break and set a searching gallop as Irad Ortiz, Jr. settled the 17-10 favorite in sixth, as far back as he had ever raced previous to this.Outfielder had just one runner behind and a good seven to eight lengths to raise as the field hit the stretch and Throckmorton didn't appear to be stopping. But just when it looked like it would be too late, Outfielder came with one final surge for an eye-catching success. The stakes-winning Notte d'Oro is a daughter of SW & MGSP May Night (Gulch), herself the dam of MGSW & GISP turfer Red Rifle (Giant's Causeway). Outfielder is one of 14 black-type and 54 overall winners bred on this cross, numbers that include top-level scorers Rock Fall, Olympiad, Prince of Monaco and Competitionofideas.Notte d'Oro is also responsible for a yearling colt by Quality Road that fetched $550,000 from First Row Club/Starlight/Madaket at Keeneland September last month and she was most recently bred back to Quality Road.7th-Keeneland, $138,742, Alw, 10-8, (NW1STL), 3yo, 5 1/2fT, 1:02.41, fm, 1/2 length.OUTFIELDER (c, 3, Speightstown–Notte d'Oro {SW-USA, SP-Can, $242,482}, by Medaglia d'Oro) Sales history: $300,000 RNA Wlg '23 KEENOV; $850,000 Ylg '24 FTSAUG.
