Kaya Baysal has pulled out of the Junior World Darts Championship in Gibraltar after changing his nationality. The 16-year-old, who has been tipped as one of the next superstars of the game, will now represent Turkey rather than England.Baysal has been one of the biggest young talents on the circuitGettyFollowing the switch, he is now no longer eligible to represent England and will not take part in the individual events. The final of the Junior World Darts Championship will be played on the Ally Pally stage on December 23.Baysal was beaten in the 2025 final by Mitchell Lawrie. Now the teenager has his sights set on qualifying for the World Darts Championship itself later this year.On his official X account, he posted a statement confirming the situation. He said: “Due to the change in my nationality, I am no longer eligible to represent England.“This has led to me making the decision not to return to Gibraltar this year to compete in the individual events.“Now that my Turkish descent has been registered and authenticated by the PDC, I will instead be fully focused on preparing for the PDC World Championship qualifier held in Slovakia on November 28.“I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all the lads in the England team all the best.”Bright futureBaysal has already signed a deal with Target and claimed the 2026 JDC Winmau World Masters in Milton Keynes and the 2025 Budapest Classic.Baysal was the runner-up in the JDC final in 2025The latter made him the youngest winner of a senior WDF event. He surpassed Luke Littler‘s record by 13 days as a 14-year-old last year to win the Budapest Classic. And his coach Keith Brunt doesn’t think there is anything stopping him from emulating Littler and becoming a world champion.Speaking about his prodigy, he said: “He has a lot of work to do but who knows.“He’s calm and never fazed by who he is playing, has got his head screwed on, and has very supportive parents.”The WDF general secretary Nick Rolls is also predicting a big future for Baysal. In January 2025, Littler demolished Michael van Gerwen to become the youngest world champion in historyGetty“He’s making rapid progress and his performances in Budapest proved that if you’re good enough, you’re old enough.“Two of our previous youngest-ever winners were Michael van Gerwen and Luke Littler, so Kaya is in excellent company.”Baysal is looking to become one of 128 players to make the World Darts Championship. To make that, the teenager will have to come through the qualifiers. And because he’s switched allegiance to Turkey, he takes part in the European qualifiers rather than the Challenge or Development Tour.
