William O’Connor channelled his inner Simon Whitlock by killing a bug during his Swiss Darts Trophy first round win.The Irishman comfortably beat Finland’s Jani Haavisto 6-1 on Friday to seal his place in the next round on Saturday.One bug met it’s demise at the hands of O’Connor at the Swiss Darts TrophyBut it was an intruder on the board in the first leg of the match that proved to be the biggest talking point of his victory.And the 40-year-old was more than happy to stop it from becoming a nuisance as he failed to hesitate in killing it – before celebrating wildly.The incident has recalled memories of Australian fan favourite Whitlock memorably squishing a fly during his World Grand Prix clash against Mervyn King in 2020.But while Whitlock chose to prod his finger on the insect, O’Connor elected to stamp on the bug after it jumped off the board and onto the floor.View Tweet: https://t.co/El7TJyMiDtHe proceeded to chuck his arms in the air, as the fans in Basel joined in with cheers of their own.What was said about O’Connor’s actions?Giving his reaction, a shocked commentator said: “Have we got a Basel bug? Willie’s just killed it!”His colleague Dan Dawson then stated: “Calm down Willie! The sheer bloodlust of Willie O’Connor.”Composing himself, O’Connor then pinned double four to take the opening leg.But as he went to retrieve his two darts on the board, ‘The Magpie’ gave the bug in question an extra stamp just to make sure he wouldn’t be making another appearance.Dawson was left even more horrified, as he then remarked: “Oh no, he’s gone back in!O’Connor’s first leg actions drew the biggest cheer from his win over Haavisto“There was some sort of insect, Willie O’Connor has mortally wounded it, hit a winning double and then finished it off in the most merciless fashion possible.”Replays then showed the size of the bug, which was almost covering one of the single four beds.And it was then time for Dawson to perform a drastic U-turn on O’Connor’s decision to kill it.Joking that O’Connor didn’t do enough, he quipped: “That’s a beast, what’s that? Burn its body!”O’Connor will now face World Series Finals winner Ross Smith for a place in the third round, with the Limerick native stressing he must perform better having averaged 92.95 against Haavisto.He said: “I didn’t feel too comfortable early on, a bit of a twitch in my eye, I don’t know, a bit tired maybe, but my eye was twitching a bit.“It relaxed as the game went on, so, not so bad, we got the win and that is the most important thing.”
