The three-week international break has officially come to an end, and Tottenham Hotspur return to competitive action on Saturday with a trip to Old Trafford. Here are five questions we need answers to when Spurs face Man United. It is fair to say the pressure on Roberto De Zerbi is at its highest since he joined the club earlier this year, with his side sitting bottom of the Premier League table after five games of the new season.Watching Tottenham at the moment is a bit like watching someone put together the perfect footballing move, only to trip over the ball when they finally reach the goal. Spurs have done plenty right in possession and in their attacking build-up, but when it comes to the one thing that ultimately matters – putting the ball in the net – they have repeatedly fluffed their lines. The three-week break could therefore have come at a good time for the club, providing a much-needed reset. However, it has also brought plenty of questions that we will need answers to when Tottenham travel to Old Trafford. Here are the five biggest ones. Will Jan Paul Van Hecke and Micky Van de Ven be passed fit to play for Tottenham?Tottenham’s annual injury crisis may have arrived a little earlier than scheduled this season because, in a very Spursy twist, both of their starting centre-backs have managed to return from international duty with injuries.Jan Paul Van Hecke returned to Hotspur Way midway through the three-week international break after picking up a foot injury during the Netherlands’ 2-1 win over Serbia towards the end of last month. The seriousness of the injury and whether Van Hecke will be fit enough to feature on Saturday remains unclear. There was, however, a huge boost this week when the £52m summer signing was reportedly spotted training with his Tottenham teammates.Tottenham captain Micky Van de Ven also picked up a nasty wrist injury in the Netherlands’ final game of the break against Serbia, when Luka Jovic accidentally landed heavily on the Dutchman’s arm.Van de Ven was immediately taken off after feeling dizzy, although Netherlands boss Xavi confirmed that ‘it’s not a big injury’.Tottenham supporters will still want to hear an update from De Zerbi on the latest condition of both players.2. Is James Maddison finally going to start a Tottenham game? Here is a rather shocking one: even Dejan Kulusevski, who has not played a single minute of competitive football in more than a year, started a Premier League game for Spurs more recently than James Maddison. The England international has only featured through brief cameos since returning from an ACL injury towards the end of last season. He has also struggled with fitness issues since, making the last three weeks particularly important as he worked towards finally being ready to start a match.De Zerbi has not had a single natural No.10 to work with so far this season. He has tried Conor Gallagher and Mateus Fernandes in the role, but both have been square pegs in a round hole.A playmaker with Maddison’s creativity would be welcomed by almost any manager, and De Zerbi will certainly be desperate to finally have one available. The big question is whether Saturday is finally the day he gets his first Premier League start in more than 17 months.3. Will Dejan Kulusevski be fit enough for the bench?Dejan Kulusevski’s last competitive appearance dates back to 11 May 2025 against Crystal Palace, with the Swede having had a very complicated knee injury to deal with since. He has, however, made very good progress over the last few weeks, moving from individual training to regular full training. De Zerbi even said the international break would be ‘important’ for Kulusevski to take another step towards match fitness. And it certainly was. The Swede has even featured in an 11v11 training game at Hotspur Way in recent days.Still, a player returning from such a long lay-off and a complicated knee injury will be eased into competitive action very slowly. That leaves one obvious question – does Kulusevski finally make the matchday squad and take a place on the bench on Saturday?De Zerbi used a similar approach with Maddison last season, keeping him as an unused substitute for a few games before eventually bringing him back onto the pitch. Even being named on the bench could therefore serve as a huge moral boost for Kulusevski and also those around him.Credit: @thefrederikkejensen / Instagram4. Will Tottenham get their first Premier League win of the season? For only the second time in their history, Tottenham have gone into five games of a Premier League season without a win. The previous occasion came in 2008/09 under Juande Ramos, when Spurs had also managed only two points from their opening five games.Three more winless games later, Ramos was sacked. De Zerbi will certainly be starting to feel pressure for results by now.Man United manager Michael Carrick is not exactly in a comfortable position either. His side have managed only one more win than Tottenham this season, which perhaps explains why Saturday’s fixture has already been dubbed ‘El Sackico’.There is no clear favourite given how desperate both teams are for a result, although Tottenham are undoubtedly in the worse position.Spurs supporters can at least find some encouragement in the fact that United have beaten Tottenham only once in their previous nine meetings, so tipping Spurs to leave Old Trafford with a victory would hardly be a wild prediction.5. Who will Roberto De Zerbi name in his front three?De Zerbi certainly has plenty of options for his front three, but that also creates a dilemma.Should he prioritise the players who have spent the past two weeks training with him, such as Savio, Mohammed Kudus and Dominic Solanke, as Spurs Web picked out from the club’s training clips? Or should he favour the internationals who returned from the break in red-hot form, such as Mathys Tel and Omar Marmoush?De Zerbi is a tactically astute manager who is also very demanding of his players to stick to his ideas, but he also cannot simply ignore those coming off impressive performances for their countries.Tel, for example, scored five goals in three starts for France U21 during the break, while Marmoush scored a brace for Egypt against South Sudan a few weeks ago. After Tottenham’s struggles in front of goal, De Zerbi will have an interesting decision to make when he names his front three at Old Trafford.READ MORE: Tottenham and Man United combined XI based on this season makes for sad reading – Spurs WebThe post Five Spurs questions we need answers to ahead of Man United vs Tottenham appeared first on Spurs Web.
