A San Francisco woman said she reached her stop in a self-driving Waymo, then could not get the door open from the inside. Grace, who posts on TikTok as Grace of the Moment (@graceofthemoment), filmed herself in the back seat with a neutral expression while she pulled the interior handle. The door did not open. In her caption, she wrote, “the door to my waymo didn’t open when i got to my destination lol this feels like a serious safety violation,” with the tags Waymo, SF, and San Francisco. She seemed visibly worried, even though she revealed that she is not claustrophobic. Grace contacted rider support, and a voice over the car speaker then said, “Connected to rider support. This is Lance with Waymo. How can I help?” Grace replied, “Hi, the door isn’t opening.” Support unlocked the door after she said the inside lever failed Lance said, “Oh, everything – oh, let me go ahead and have the door open for you. So have you tried, um, pulling the lever twice inside and it’s not working?” Grace answered, “Yeah, I did.” @graceofthemoment the door to my waymo didn’t open when i got to my destination lol this feels like a serious safety violation #waymo #sf #sanfrancisco ♬ original sound – Grace of the Moment He said, “Okay, got it. Thank you for that. So just give me a sec here. Oh, I’ve unlocked the door. Can you try it now?” Grace said, “Yep, thank you,” and pulled the handle again. This time the door opened, and the camera followed her as she stepped onto the sidewalk. As she got out, Lance asked, “Okay, awesome. Anything else?” Grace replied, “Uh, that’s it.” He said, “Okay, take care now. Have a good day. Bye.” She closed the car door from the outside, and the video ended. Under the video, some viewers focused on how she spoke to the agent rather than on the door. One commenter wrote, “Bruh he’s just a customer support agent. Why you gotta have that attitude for.” Grace of the Moment replied, “my frustration was at the situation not at him. i don’t think i sound that rude i answered all of his questions and thanked him but i guess you can feel my frustration lol.” Another commenter wrote, “I get that you were frustrated, but your tone was a little bit rude towards him and the fact that you’re posting this on social media, he might see it.” A different commenter asked whether the company had explained the failure, writing, “Wait this is wiild. Did they give an explanation for why it didn’t open.” Grace replied with a GIF that she did not get an official explanation. Another commenter wrote, “Yea imagine you get into an accident the car has no power and then a battery catches fire.” ABC7 reported a separate case in June 2026 in which a passenger said he was stuck inside a Waymo, which also took place in San Francisco. Elliot Slade told the station he was about five minutes into a ride on Highway 101 when the car entered a construction zone. He said, “There were signs. There were lights. There were cones. And it went through the cones and then sped up straight away.” Slade said a nearby highway patrol car began following them. He described officers “Shouting, ‘Stop Waymo. Stop Waymo. Stop Waymo.'” He added, “We’re like- what the heck is going on?” ABC7 reported that the Waymo later left the construction zone and took an exit into a residential neighborhood. The ride’s route through a construction zone has raised questions about Waymo’s handling of such areas, as when a California couple says their Waymo robotaxi blew through a construction zone. According to ABC7, cases like that led Waymo to recall software for almost 4,000 cars. The station reported seven Bay Area cases on one day in the prior month. Waymo told ABC7 it had identified improvement areas for its cars in construction zones and had voluntarily restricted freeway access while it put those changes in place. For Waymo, the complaints don’t stop at getting stuck, as one woman said her ride was interrupted by an age check.
