David Silva has come out of retirement to join Hong Kong Premier League club Supreme Sha Tin at the age of 40, according to Paul McNamara of the South China Morning Post.The former Manchester City midfielder has agreed a short-term deal with the newly promoted side, more than three years after a knee injury brought his playing career to a halt.Club owner Jim Wong Chi-chuen told the newspaper that Silva could make his debut against Hong Kong Football Club on October 18. If that game comes too soon, the meeting with BC Rangers on November 7 is the alternative.Supreme won its opening league game against Eastern before suffering three consecutive defeats. English coach Tom Ballantyne took charge this week following Kenneth Kwok’s departure, and Silva will join a squad that is still adjusting to life in the top division.The Spaniard retired in July 2023 after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during preseason training with Real Sociedad. He had returned to La Liga in 2020 after a decade in Manchester and helped Sociedad win the Copa del Rey and qualify for the Champions League.His City career brought 436 appearances and 77 goals following his arrival from Valencia. He won four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and five League Cups, while providing 93 assists in the English top flight.Silva scored the opening goal in City’s 6-0 FA Cup final victory over Watford in 2019, which completed a domestic treble under Pep Guardiola. The club later honored him with a statue outside the Etihad Stadium.He also won 125 caps for Spain, collecting European Championship medals in 2008 and 2012 either side of the 2010 World Cup.
