Las Vegas will soon be getting an NBA team. It was announced back in March that the NBA’s Board of Governors would be voting to decide on whether or not the league would undergo expansion. The NBA is exploring expansion teams in both Las Vegas and SeattleGettyFollowing the approval of adding two new teams, both Las Vegas and Seattle were identified as landing destinations. For Seattle, the Emerald City is hoping to welcome back their beloved SuperSonics following their move to Oklahoma City in 2008, where they rebranded into the Thunder. Las Vegas, though, will be home to an NBA team for the very first time as the Sin City continues to add to its sports portfolio following the acquisition of the NFL‘s Raiders and MLB‘s Athletics, the latter of whom will move permanently ahead of the 2028 season. Of course, they also house the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces, who have won three titles in the last four seasons. It was expected that the NBA’s expansion teams could enter the league as soon as the 2028-29 season. However, a recent report from The Athletic suggests that there may be a delay to Las Vegas’ debut, with the team looking more likely to join the Association for the 2029-30 season. “There is real excitement around a renovated T-Mobile Arena,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said last month. “I think everyone acknowledges if a team were to stay there, it needs some significant improvements. “But at the same time, there are groups who have presented plans to build what I would call a modern entertainment palace in Las Vegas.“It’s a unique market where you could truly see essentially 365-days-a-year activity.”Vegas wants an NBA team to add to its growing major sports portfolioGettyA decision over who has won the Vegas bid is expected to be announced before the end of 2026gettyNBA announces three finalists for Vegas bidOn September 29, the NBA announced that they had decided on three finalists for the Vegas expansion bid, with the winner expected to pay at least $12 or $13 billion to land the franchise. The winner is also expected to fund the cost of a new arena. These finalists include groups led by Nancy Walton Laurie and Bill Laurie, Steve Apostolopoulos and Marc Lasry, and Bill Foley and Jerry Colangelo.UFC CEO Dana White also hasn’t ruled out the possibility of being part of an ownership group, amid reports he would be interested in helping land the Vegas expansion team. A decision is expected to be made about who has won the bid by December, with the NBA quietly optimistic that those who miss out may then pivot and turn their attention to perhaps entering the race for the Seattle team. That, in turn, could spark more of a bidding war, which will inadvertently drive the price up – all to the benefit of the NBA.
