Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation as a disciplinary case was opened against the star. The 41-year-old stormed out of the national team camp following a dispute over playing time with head coach Jorge Jesus.Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended by the Portuguese FAGettyRonaldo was angered after being left on the bench for the entire match during Portugal’s recent 4-2 Nations League win over Norway. The forward later issued a bizarre statement of nearly 2,000 words, apologising to his teammates but conceding that his actions required consequences. However, a statement published on Saturday by the Portuguese Federation confirmed that proceedings against the five-time Ballon d’Or winner are underway. It read: “The initiation of disciplinary proceedings against Cristiano Ronaldo, by deliberation of the Non-Professional Section, of October 9, 2026, with the purpose of the investigation of any disciplinary relevance of the facts participated on October 7”.“Without prejudice to the automatic preventive suspension to which he was subject until the date of establishment, the non-automatic preventive suspension of the player was determined and the urgent nature was attributed to the process”.What next for Ronaldo? As it stands, a disciplinary panel is currently reviewing the case to determine the exact duration of the ban.His punishment could range anywhere between a one to six game ban. That could rule for forward out of next month’s Nations League fixtures against Denmark and Wales.Ronaldo gave a heartfelt apology to his international teammates on Tuesday, recognising the impact of his premature exit.“I also owe an apology to my national team teammates for having left the camp,” Ronaldo said.“Despite the absolute breach of trust in the coach’s word, as those who witnessed these conversations can attest, I should not have done it.“The responsibility is exclusively mine. I apologise to the Portuguese people once again, but the breaking of one’s word has, for me, a defining impact. “I felt that, from that point on, my remaining would only harm the working group, and I did what I have always said I would do if I did not feel useful: I packed my bags and left.“The consequence of this act of mine must be assessed and punished by the Portuguese Football Federation. I understand that the punishment should have no mitigating factors. I am not just any player; I am team captain, and that constitutes an aggravating factor.”Portugal boss Jesus issued as brief response to Ronaldo’s statement in midweek, preferring not to fuel the fire.He told reporters: “I read the statement and now, like I do every day, I’m going to the Federation headquarters to work, to think about the Portuguese national team. I have nothing more to say.”The saga is a sad end to an incredible international career in which Ronaldo has broken a glut of records. In all, Ronaldo has made 234 appearances for Portugal since making his debut back in 2014. In that time, he has scored a record 146 goals.More to follow…
