My side project got 9.2K views here last month. Here's what that actually turned into, plus the comment that was right

Wait 5 sec.

Last month I posted ClipKaboom here, a searchable library of meme clips and sound effects for people who edit shorts. It's my best Reddit post ever: 9.2K views, 31 upvotes, 18 shares. Here's the honest follow-up, since these posts usually stop at launch day. What 9.2K views turned into 27 signups 3,385 downloads total, ~1,400 of them sound effects 3 paying subscribers 349 visitors, from PostHog Not life-changing, but real people downloading real files every day. The comment that was right if it's a sound effect who cares about video resolution and watermark? The site started as a video clip library, and the sound effects inherited the video paywall. I never thought about it. Sound effects are now free, full quality and no account. The data I didn't expect I assumed vine boom would be the top sound. It isn't. "Fahhh" is, with 35 downloads to vine boom's 12. Most of the top sounds are reactions (huh, what the hell, fahhh), plus a surprising number of boring UI sounds like the Apple notification and a mouse click. What I shipped since a meme images tab (2,100+ images) next to the 4,500 clips and 700 sounds semantic search, so "when someone gets roasted" finds the right clip even when those words aren't in the title cheaper plans an API for people building editors and bots Lesson: look at shares, not upvotes. 18 shares on 31 upvotes means people were sending it to their friend who edits. The builders here liked it, but the editors are the ones who use it. Someone also asked for a $39–49 lifetime pass instead of a subscription. Builders: have you done lifetime deals, and did you regret it? The app is clipkaboom.com if anybody is interested in checking it out submitted by /u/Mediocre-Number-5498 [link] [comments]
