Please, stop using "speciate" in reference to bacterial cultures

Wait 5 sec.

I frequently see people writing in their notes that they are "waiting for cultures to speciate" or that "cultures have speciated". Speciation is the creation of a new species as two populations of the same species evolve into two separate species. The word you're looking for is "identification", "to result", "to grow", etc., not speciation. I can forgive a hospitalist using this, but seeing ID fellows and attendings write this is embarrassing. It's worse than "transaminitis" (my transaminases are not inflamed, thank you). Thank you for your attention to this important matter. [/rant] submitted by /u/Spooferfish [link] [comments]
