National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi’s four bodyguards have been granted bail by the Masaka High court, but two of them will remain in custody over separate charges pending before another court.Masaka High court senior resident judge Victoria Nakintu Katamba on Wednesday granted Edward Ssebuwuufu alias Eddie Mutwe, Achilleo Kivumbi, Grace Wakabi alias Smart-wa Bobi and Gadhafi Mugumya cash bail of Shs 5 million each.Their sureties were ordered to execute non-cash bonds of Shs 50 million each. The judge also ordered the four accused to surrender their passports and report to the deputy High court registrar on the first Monday of every month. The four have been on remand over charges of aggravated robbery, malicious damage to property and assault arising from a scuffle during the burial of UK-based businessman Pascal Ssekasamba in Kisekka sub-county, Lwengo district, in May 2024.According to the charge sheet, the accused allegedly assaulted and damaged a video camera belonging to Zainabu Namusaazi, a journalist with Next Media Group, and smashed a smartphone belonging to Margret Kayondo, a correspondent with Radio Ssimba. They are also accused of stealing two other smartphones valued at Shs 200,000 and causing grievous bodily harm to three people during the incident. The four applied for bail for the second time through their lawyers led by Elias Luyimabazi Nalukoola. The lawyers argued that their clients had spent a prolonged period on remand without trial and that some had dependants, including children, who were suffering in their absence. The court was also told that Wakabi has a sick mother who requires his care. Nalukoola said the accused were ready to face trial but had been waiting for the prosecution to begin presenting its witnesses. Each accused presented three sureties, including NUP members of parliament, local government leaders and relatives. However, justice Katamba noted that the Masaka High court had no jurisdiction over charges the accused may be facing before other courts.NUP later said the four would not all be released despite the Masaka bail ruling because Kivumbi and Ssebuwuufu are facing a separate case before the Kawempe High court.According to a statement issued by the party, Mugumya and Wakabi would be released once their bail money was paid, while Kivumbi and Ssebuwuufu would remain in Luzira Prison because of the separate case. The party described the separate case as involving a charge of “unlawful drilling” and disputed the legality of their continued detention.Masaka city mayor Florence Namayanja said the party would launch a fundraising campaign to raise the Shs 20 million required to meet the four accused persons’ cash bail conditions. The post Four Bobi Wine bodyguards granted bail, but two remain in custody appeared first on The Observer Media Ltd.
