Barnett-Woodford emerges as major Midland basin oil target with 6,400 locations

(World Oil) – The Barnett-Woodford holds approximately 3 billion barrels (Bbbl) of undeveloped recoverable oil across more than 6,400 drilling locations in the Midland basin, according to new analysis from Enverus Intelligence Research (EIR). EIR identified the Barnett-Woodford as the largest source of undeveloped oil among interval groups in the basin. The estimated resource is equivalent to roughly 75% of the remaining oil resource in the Middle Bakken and Three Forks across the U.S. Williston basin, according to the research.Development of the Barnett-Woodford has accelerated as early drilling results have supported broader operator programs. EIR said the interval was largely absent from operator and investor development models as recently as 18 months ago.Average Barnett-Woodford well performance has exceeded the Midland basin base by more than 30% since 2025. At well costs of $800/ft, EIR estimates breakeven prices of approximately $41/bbl, broadly in line with recent Midland and Delaware basin averages.“The Barnett-Woodford has quickly transitioned from a relatively underappreciated interval group into a material source of genuinely incremental Midland basin oil inventory,” said Stephen Sagriff, EIR director and report author. “With more than 6,400 identified drilling locations and well economics increasingly competitive with established Midland targets, the play represents the largest oil-directed expansion opportunity in the Lower 48.”After adjusting for development maturity, wells per section and timing, EIR identified Ector, Crane and northwestern Upton counties as the strongest-performing portion of the play. Recent wells in those areas averaged an estimated breakeven of approximately $42/bbl.Southeastern Andrews, southwestern Martin and western Midland counties ranked next, with recent wells averaging breakevens of about $46/bbl.The analysis is part of an EIR research series examining drilling inventory, economics and development trends across major North American oil and gas basins.
