For the fifth year running, the Dutch national team is supporting Pink Ribbon during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Through the ‘Oranje voor Pink’ campaign, the players are raising awareness of breast cancer and the importance of recognising changes in your breasts. This year, the Dutch team is doing so with seven unique shirts, as 1 in 7 women in the Netherlands will develop breast cancer. During the home match against Hungary on 13 October, this message will be given extra prominence in the stadium. ‘Oranje voor Pink’ was founded four years ago, inspired by the personal experiences of Kim Blewanus – then a physiotherapist with the OranjeLeeuwinnen – and her sister Eva, a physiotherapist at Ajax. Both were diagnosed with breast cancer. Their story prompted the players to use their influence to raise awareness of the disease. Orange shirt with distinctive pink ribbon Daniëlle van de Donk explains why the team is supporting Pink Ribbon: “When Kim fell ill, we realised that you can be affected by breast cancer even at a young age. When you look around a team of 23 players, it’s a shock to hear the statistic ‘1 in 7’. It’s not something you want to think about. That’s why, even when you’re young, it’s all the more important to know your breasts well and to spot any changes in good time.” To raise awareness of this message, Old Threads has created seven exclusive designs from existing Oranje shirts. Each shirt features the distinctive Pink Ribbon. Anyone who shares the Leeuwinnen’s call to action on social media stands a chance of winning one of the shirts. In this way, supporters and players are helping to spread the message to even more people during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Before the match, the players from the Netherlands and Hungary will wear a pink ribbon on their chests. Supporters who are currently living with or have had breast cancer have been invited to the match. About Pink Ribbon Pink Ribbon is dedicated to supporting women with breast cancer.
