Avengers Campus was supposed to be one of the biggest additions to Disney California Adventure Park in years. Five years after opening, however, the land has been widely condemned. The Marvel-themed land opened in June 2021 – delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and replacing A Bug’s Land, which permanently closed in September 2018. Inspired by the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers Campus was designed as a training facility where guests could join Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and experience their own superhero adventures.Credit: DisneyThe land’s backstory sees Tony Stark transform one of his father’s former Stark Industries facilities into a headquarters for the next generation of superheroes. Its buildings include Avengers Headquarters, the Worldwide Engineering Brigade (WEB), and an Ancient Sanctum associated with Doctor Strange. When Avengers Campus debuted, its main new attraction was WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure, an interactive (and physically exhausting) dark ride that allows guests to shoot virtual webs at runaway Spider-Bots. It also incorporated Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!, which originally opened in 2017 as a replacement for The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.Other offerings include Pym Test Kitchen, Pym Tasting Lab, superhero meet-and-greets, and live entertainment featuring Marvel characters. However, despite the popularity of the franchise, Avengers Campus has struggled to win over some Disney Parks fans.Credit: DisneyDisneyland Fans Blast Avengers Campus as Disney’s Worst LandIn a recent Reddit discussion, one guest described Avengers Campus as “the worst land in all of California Adventure, maybe even the whole resort.”Their biggest complaint was the lack of things to do, arguing that the land feels more like somewhere guests pass through on their way to Cars Land than a destination in its own right.“When I heard Bug’s Land was closing, I was excited, thinking Disney can finally replace that baby land with something cooler,” they wrote. “Then you get to Avengers Campus and it’s pretty mediocre.”Credit: DisneyOthers were equally unimpressed. One Reddit user called it “one of the worst lands at any Disney property,” while another revealed that they and their partner have nicknamed the area “Avengers Business Park.”That nickname reflects one of the biggest criticisms of Avengers Campus: its appearance.Unlike Cars Land, which recreates Radiator Springs from Pixar’s Cars (2006), Avengers Campus relies heavily on concrete plazas, industrial buildings, and relatively plain architecture. The contrast between the two neighboring lands has not gone unnoticed.“I think the fact that it is right next to Cars Land makes it even worse,” one guest wrote. “You are IN Radiator Springs! And then you walk into … a big plaza of concrete.”Another argued that Disney missed an opportunity to incorporate more futuristic technology into its Marvel land, suggesting holographic signs, illuminated pathways, interactive displays, and superhero statues could have made the environment feel more immersive.Credit: Jeremy Thompson, Flickr“I wish they had leaned more into the sci-fi elements of the MCU for the exteriors rather than just having it be this big concrete college-looking area,” they wrote. The criticism is particularly interesting considering the sheer variety of locations featured throughout the MCU, from Wakanda and Asgard to the Avengers’ headquarters in New York. One fan questioned why Disney chose to base the land around a relatively ordinary training facility, rather than one of the franchise’s more distinctive locations.“Part of the problem is that Avengers are associated with New York. And we’re in a park in California. But the Campus fails to even feel like New York,” they wrote, describing the land as a “corporate block that suggests no identity of its own.”The surrounding area also creates another problem. According to one guest, the music played throughout Avengers Campus can be heard from Cars Land, interfering with the atmosphere of Radiator Springs.Credit: DisneyThey said that while they enjoy the Marvel soundtrack itself, hearing it from another themed land “causes so much dissonance.”Fans Say Avengers Campus Has Lost What Made Its Predecessor SpecialBeyond its appearance, another recurring complaint concerns the lack of shade.A Bug’s Land, which opened in 2002, was inspired by Pixar’s A Bug’s Life (1998). Designed primarily for younger children, the area featured oversized plants and everyday objects that made visitors feel as though they had shrunk to the size of an insect. Its attractions included Flik’s Flyers, Heimlich’s Chew Chew Train, Francis’ Ladybug Boogie, Tuck and Roll’s Drive ‘Em Buggies, and Princess Dot Puddle Park, a water-play area.Credit: DisneyAlthough these attractions were relatively simple, the land (which still inspires a tiny easter egg in Avengers Campus) provided a quieter, more sheltered environment for families with younger children – something several guests believe Avengers Campus has failed to replace.“It’s disgustingly hot in the heat because there are no trees/shade,” one Reddit user complained. “I really miss the relief that Bug’s Land provided during the hotter parts of the year and just the quaint peace that it had.”Another described the closure of A Bug’s Land as Disney’s “biggest mistake,” claiming Avengers Campus simply is not worth visiting when temperatures rise.“I always skip over Avengers Campus when I go to DCA,” they wrote. “It’s just not worth it and the sun beams on you the entire time.”The situation is made worse by the fact that Avengers Campus has relatively few attractions. While WEB SLINGERS was built specifically for the land, Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! was already operating for years before Avengers Campus opened.Disney originally relied heavily on live entertainment and character appearances to fill the gaps between rides. However, several of those offerings have since been reduced or eliminated.Credit: DisneyDoctor Strange: Mysteries of the Mystic Arts ended in June 2024, while Disney removed live stunt performers from The Amazing Spider-Man! later that year. The Spider-Man Stuntronic continues to perform its dramatic rooftop launch.Further cuts followed in 2025, when Avengers Assemble!, a rooftop stunt show featuring characters such as Black Widow, Captain America, Black Panther, and Taskmaster, permanently ended.Disney also reduced performances of Warriors of Wakanda: The Disciplines of the Dora Milaje and Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Dance Off! Character encounters and some live entertainment have continued, but the land no longer offers the same lineup it had when it opened. For one Reddit user, those changes have made Avengers Campus feel increasingly empty.Credit: Disney Parks Blog“The land lacks character, especially now that the superheroes aren’t out as much as they used to be,” they wrote. They suggested that the finished product feels like a scaled-back version of Disney’s original vision, adding that while future attractions might improve the experience, they would not necessarily address its appearance.Of course, not every visitor shares these complaints. Avengers Campus still offers opportunities to meet beloved Marvel characters, enjoy themed food, and experience two attractions that cater to very different audiences.Credit: DisneyHowever, the wider criticism is that Disney replaced a charming, family-friendly land with one that has relatively little to distinguish it beyond the Marvel name. Can Disney’s Avengers Campus Expansion Fix Its Problems?Fortunately, Avengers Campus is set to double in size with two new attractions opening in 2028.Avengers Infinity Defense will send guests across the multiverse to battle King Thanos, visiting locations including Asgard, Wakanda, and New York. Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, and Jeremy Renner will reprise their Marvel roles.Credit: DisneyThe second attraction, Stark Flight Lab, will place guests inside two-person gyro-kinetic pods, which move along a track before being lifted and spun by giant robotic arms. Robert Downey Jr., Anthony Mackie, and Brie Larson will feature. Both additions should give guests more reasons to visit, although they won’t automatically resolve complaints about shade or theming.Do you agree that Avengers Campus is one of Disney’s worst themed lands? The post Disneyland’s Avengers Campus Condemned After 5 Years appeared first on Inside the Magic.
