Universal is set to shutter its iconic show WaterWorld at one park in November.WaterWorld: A Live Sea War Spectacular first opened at Universal Studios Hollywood on October 21, 1995. Located on the park’s Upper Lot, the beloved stunt show features jet ski chases, explosions, live combat, and a spectacular plane crash. Its popularity has since inspired versions at Universal Studios Japan, Singapore, and Beijing.Credit: Universal Studios HollywoodInterestingly, the show has enjoyed a much warmer reception than the film that inspired it. Starring Kevin Costner, 1995’s Waterworld received mixed reviews and became notorious for its enormous production budget. The Universal attraction, meanwhile, earned critical acclaim, winning a prestigious Thea Award in 1996. It still generates huge crowds decades after it first opened. However, one version is set to close in November.Universal Schedules Closure of WaterWorldWaterWorld will close at Universal Studios Japan from November 28, 2026.The show has been a fixture since the Osaka park opened on March 31, 2001. Located in its own dedicated area, the show underwent a major overhaul in June 2018, introducing enhanced stunts, pyrotechnics, and 3D sound. Despite its age, it remains one of Universal Studios Japan’s longest-running attractions.Credit: Dick Thomas Johnson, FlickrFortunately, its closure isn’t permanent. The Universal Studios Japan website currently states that its closure will last until December 27, 2026.This closure mimics previous years. In 2025, WaterWorld closed for refurbishment from December 8 to December 24.With temperatures averaging highs of just 54 degrees Fahrenheit (12 degrees Celsius) and lows of 42 degrees Fahrenheit (5 degrees Celsius) in Osaka in December, it’s hardly surprising that Universal would choose this period to refurbish a show notorious for often leaving guests soaked.【USJ ウォーターワールド】ローガンさんありがとうございました/Universal Studios Japan WATER WORLD https://t.co/7RhZfim1i6 @YouTubeより#USJ #WATERWORLD #ウォーターワールド pic.twitter.com/M5XhbBvjR9— 𝐑 (@r_usj_memory_) June 29, 2022While fans have previously expressed fears that Universal will shutter WaterWorld to make way for an attraction inspired by more recent IP, it seems like Universal still has a lot of faith in the show.Rumors and early concept art suggest WaterWorld could feature at Universal United Kingdom Resort, which is scheduled to open in Bedfordshire in 2031. Other rumored additions include lands inspired by Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, and arguably the UK’s greatest export, Paddington. However, Universal has yet to officially confirm any of the park’s attractions.Have you ever experienced WaterWorld at Universal Studios Japan? The post Universal Studios Confirms the Upcoming Closure of Its 25-Year-Old ‘WaterWorld’ Show appeared first on Inside the Magic.
