Mercury retrograde from Oct 24: what the research really saysBitcoin / TetherUSBINANCE:BTCUSDTWenMoonLamboMercury goes retrograde from October 24 to November 13, 2026 (UTC). Expect the usual wave of "be careful, Mercury is retrograde" posts. Here's what the evidence says, and what it doesn't. What retrograde is: an optical effect. Seen from Earth, Mercury appears to drift backwards against the stars for about three weeks, roughly three times a year, because the two planets orbit at different speeds. Nothing about the planet changes. The chart shades all three 2026 windows: Feb 26 to Mar 20, Jun 29 to Jul 23, and the coming Oct 24 to Nov 13. The study everyone cites: "Cultural beliefs and equity prices: Evidence from astrological belief in Mercury retrograde" (Qi, Wang and Zhang, Journal of Banking & Finance, vol. 192, 2026). It covers stock indices in 48 countries, not crypto. The latest version reports index returns about 3.5% a year lower during retrograde windows than at other times. Earlier drafts put it at about 3.2 to 3.3%. The part that gets lost: the authors don't claim Mercury moves markets. Their argument is that investors who believe in retrograde get more pessimistic during those windows, and that sentiment shows up in prices. It's a belief effect, not a planetary one. What that means for crypto: • The paper says nothing directly about Bitcoin. • If there's an effect at all, it would come from sentiment, so watch sentiment, not the sky. • A three-week window is a lot of noise, so one retrograde period proves nothing either way. • This one has a built-in confounder: the Fed's rate decision lands on October 28, inside the window. If BTC moves hard that week, the FOMC is a far likelier explanation than Mercury. The shaded box marks the window, so we can look back on Nov 13 and see what happened. Treat it as an experiment, not a signal. Educational content, not financial advice.
