A widespread power cut hit several localities across Malta and Gozo on Thursday morning, with traffic lights going out and reports of people becoming stuck in lifts.Affected areas include Cospicua, parts of Iklin, Lija, Pietà, Rabat, Birkirkara, Sliema, Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq, Qormi, San Ġwann, Xemxija, Gudja, Gżira, Mtarfa, Santa Luċija, Luqa and Żabbar, as well as parts of Gozo.Enemalta’s live outage map was also temporarily unavailable, while people attempting to contact the electricity provider reportedly encountered a dead phone line. The outage also affected traffic lights across the islands, raising concerns for motorists and pedestrians. At least two people were reportedly stuck in a lift during the disruption.Power began returning to some areas after 8.30am.The outage comes while Malta’s electricity demand is being supplied entirely through local generation, after the electricity interconnector with Sicily was switched off on Monday. The interconnector is expected to remain unavailable for around 12 days as work on the second interconnector progresses in Ragusa. Enemalta and Interconnect Malta had previously said there was sufficient local generation capacity to maintain a stable electricity supply during the works. The cause of Thursday morning’s widespread outage has not yet been confirmed.•
