I'm the solo developer of Handpick, so I'm obviously biased. I have about 30,000 photos on my phone. After a trip to Colombia, I spent way too long trying to find a photo of a fruit I'd tried there. It was buried somewhere between years of screenshots, receipts, random pictures, and memories I actually cared about. Apple Photos already has a lot of useful features, but I always found the cleanup process tedious. Even deleting a single photo takes a few taps, and doing that thousands of times just felt overwhelming. So I started building Handpick, a simpler way to go through photos. Swipe up to delete, down to keep. That was the original idea. When I first shared it, a few people pointed out something pretty obvious: Swiping through 30,000 photos is still 30,000 decisions. And they were right. Making each decision easier wasn't enough. I needed a way to deal with whole groups of photos instead. So here's what Handpick does now: Groups photos by events: Trips, unusually photo-heavy days, and yearly occasions (like birthdays), so you can tackle one event at a time. Batch organization: Select multiple photos to keep, delete, or organize into albums. You can still swipe individually if you prefer. Duplicate cleanup: Finds exact duplicates and suggests one to keep. Review before deleting: Nothing gets deleted until you've reviewed and confirmed it. For example, my Colombia trip had around 1,000 photos. Instead of hunting for them throughout my library, I could pull up the trip, clear out the documents and junk, and organize the keepers into an album. Everything is processed on-device. No accounts, photo uploads, tracking, or ads. And everything is synced with Apple Photos. What's free and what isn't The core experience is completely free, with unlimited swiping, batch selection, and album organization. You can also try the automatic grouping with your newest trip, a big day, a yearly occasion, and one duplicate group. Plus unlocks grouping across your entire library, full duplicate cleanup, junk-first sorting, and large-file discovery. One limitation I want to be upfront about: Handpick only groups exact duplicates. It won't automatically choose the best of six similar sunset photos. That's partly intentional. Two of my beta testers specifically told me they wanted to remove exact duplicates while keeping similar shots, since choosing the "best" photo can be pretty subjective. But I'm still figuring out the right balance between automation and letting people decide what matters to them. If you have a messy camera roll, I'd love for you to try organizing just one trip or event. The free version is enough to test the idea. I'm especially curious: Does grouping photos actually make cleanup less overwhelming, or does it still feel like too much work? I'd genuinely appreciate feedback, especially if something feels confusing, slow, or unnecessary. I'd rather hear what isn't working than spend another few months building features nobody needs.
