Gas cylinder explosion kills 2, injures 3 in Lira garage

Two mechanics were killed and three other people injured when a gas cylinder exploded at a motorcycle garage in Ireda Central Park, Lira city in northern Uganda. The deceased have been identified as James Okabo and another man identified only as Daniel. Police said the particulars of the injured were still being established.The explosion occurred at about 6 pm on Saturday, October 10, as the mechanics repaired a motorcycle using a gas cylinder, according to police. The incident happened in the middle of a busy market, where members of the public were present, raising fears that the explosion could have caused more casualties.Police said the blast was severe, leaving one of the deceased with injuries that resulted in the dismemberment of parts of his body, while the other sustained severe head injuries.A fragment from the exploded cylinder reportedly struck a stationary white trailer, registration number UA 732DX, damaging its front bumper and windscreen.A team led by the Lira City East Divisional police commander, alongside officers from the Criminal Investigations Department and the Scene of Crime Office, visited the scene and recorded statements from witnesses.The bodies were taken to Lira regional referral hospital for postmortem examinations, while the injured were evacuated to the same facility for treatment.Police also recovered the wreckage of two motorcycles and took it to the Lira City East Division for further examination.Okema said investigations were ongoing to establish the exact cause of the explosion, verify the identities of the deceased and identify the injured.
