Home Affairs and Security Minister Glenn Bedingfield has signed the first deportation orders for two Asian prisoners who are approaching the end of their prison sentences in Malta.Bedingfield announced the move on Wednesday, saying the two prisoners were in the final weeks of their sentences.The minister said the decision forms part of a wider exercise aimed at reducing prison overcrowding and lowering the financial burden on the State.“These individuals, who will be deported at the end of their sentences, will not be allowed to re-enter Malta,” Bedingfield said.He described the move as concrete action intended to protect Malta’s security and resources.“The national interest comes first and foremost,” Bedingfield added.The minister did not provide further details about the two prisoners, including the offences for which they were serving their sentences.•
