Telangana to procure 5,800 MW renewable energy to meet high demand - The HinduPublished - October 12, 2026 09:31 pm IST - HYDERABADHYDERABADThe State Government has initiated a renewable energy procurement programme through Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation Ltd (TGREDCO) and Telangana Power Generation Corporation Ltd (TG-Genco) to ensure reliable, affordable and sustainable power supply to meet Telangana’s rapidly growing energy demand.According to the officials, the tender documents will be released for procurement of a diversified renewable energy portfolio comprising 3,000 megawatt (MW) solar power integrated with 6,000 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), 800 MW wind power, 2,000 MW renewable energy round-the-clock (RE-RTC) power and 2,000 MWh FDRE BESS.Stating that the peak electricity demand in the State has already reached 19,892 MW, the officials said it is expected to increase significantly in the coming years as the State is witnessing accelerated economic growth driven by industrial expansion, urbanisation, development of data centres, electric mobility, irrigation requirements and major infrastructure projects.To support this growth trajectory while advancing clean energy objectives, the State is adopting a comprehensive strategy to strengthen its long-term energy security through large-scale renewable energy procurement. The proposed procurement programme has been designed to provide renewable energy across all hours of the day while improving grid reliability and reducing dependence on conventional and short-term market power purchases.The officials stated that projects will be awarded through a transparent competitive bidding process and developed, financed, owned and operated by the private sector developers. The approach enables the State to secure substantial renewable energy capacity without any capital investment, budgetary support or State Government guarantee, while ensuring tariff discovery through competitive bidding and regulatory oversight.The procurement of 3,000 MW solar power with 6,000 MWh BESS, 800 MW wind power and 2,000 MW RE-RTC will be for a period of 25 years each, the 2,000 MWh with FDRE BESS will be for a 15-year period. Together, these procurements form an integrated long-term energy strategy that balances affordability, reliability and sustainability.The combination of solar energy, battery storage, wind generation and round-the-clock renewable power will create a resilient power portfolio capable of meeting the State’s growing energy demand, while reducing exposure to fuel price volatility and market fluctuations.Published - October 12, 2026 09:31 pm ISTSign in to unlock member-only benefits!Access 10 free stories every monthSave stories to read laterAccess to comment on every storySign-up/manage your newsletter subscriptions with a single clickGet notified by email for early access to discounts & offers on our products${ ind + 1 } ${ device }Last active - ${ la }
