Left side: a user tops up $100 inside an AI app, chats with Claude, then switches to GPT and Gemini. No API key anywhere. Right side: the developer watches every request land with provider cost, user price and their cut, then drags a slider to set that cut (0 to 200%). That’s OpenCredits: one balance for users across 390+ models, and a cut of every request for the developer. No provider keys to manage, no billing to build. Why it exists: my cofounder Andre built Claude Code Chat, a VS Code extension for Claude Code, and was stuck between two options: Users bring their own key: every new user had to leave the extension, sign up with a provider, add a card and paste a key. All before their first prompt. He pays for their usage: a prepaid balance with every provider, each one to keep topped up, and no clean way to bill users for what they used. So he built a third option (Claude Code Chat runs on it today). For your app: using the OpenAI or Anthropic SDK? Swap the base URL and add the checkout script. Stripe handles payment and tax (No monthly fees). One more thing: credits belong to the user, not the app. Someone who topped up in another OpenCredits app can start using yours without paying again, up to a spending limit they set. Curious how others handle this: If you’ve shipped something with AI in it: BYOK, eating the token bill, or something else? What did it cost you? If you charged per request, what cut would you set? 10%, 20%, 50%? submitted by /u/Background-Bass-5788 [link] [comments]
