Roberto De Zerbi launched a passionate defence of Dominic Solanke after Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with Man United, but one of the Premier League’s greatest-ever strikers has a different view of the 29-year-old.De Zerbi showed huge faith in Solanke by not just handing him a start at Old Trafford but also giving him the captain’s armband. The England international looked like he was lacking in sharpness again in the final third, missing several huge chances. However, he had the last laugh, as he got on the end of Sandro Tonali’s cross in stoppage time to score the equaliser.Speaking after the game, De Zerbi insisted that Solanke has come in for too much criticism, and insisted that the former Bournemouth man is the ideal option to lead the line for his side. The Tottenham boss said about the striker: “He deserves to be a captain today, because he suffered maybe too much, because ‘Tottenham didn’t win, Tottenham didn’t score, who is the striker of Tottenham? Solanke is not good enough’, it’s not true. Solanke is good enough to play, maybe he is the best striker for us, because his qualities.“He is a complete player, he is a good guy, he has personality, he has to feel good in terms of his physical condition, but he is a great player, and I wanted to show what is my confidence, and what is the importance I give him in this team.”Photo by Paul ELLIS / AFP via Getty ImagesAlan Shearer says Tottenham star Dominic Solanke lacks beliefThe Premier League’s record goalscorer, Alan Shearer, had a different take from the Spurs head coach while assessing the clash at Old Trafford on Match of the Day.Looking at Solanke’s goal tally in the Premier League over the last five seasons, Shearer was not too impressed. The Newcastle legend said: “It’s nowhere near good enough, only once in double figures when you consider the money they paid for him.”Shearer was also particularly unimpressed with Solanke’s decision to take an extra touch in the first half after being played through on goal by Lucas Bergvall. The pundit said about that incident: “Just watch how awkward and how little confidence he has here, because of his desperation to get it onto the right foot here. Naturally, you move the ball out three yards on your left foot and hit it, if he had the belief.”Talking about another moment in the first period, Shearer said about Solanke: “The lack of movement here: a goalscorer gets himself into the middle of the goal; where’s he going? When he says they need to be more clinical, he needs to be more clinical.”De Zerbi has no choice but to back SolankeAccording to reports, Tottenham have already started scouring the market for a new number nine ahead of January. However, with Richarlison having been left out of the squad, Solanke is the only out-and-out centre-forward under De Zerbi’s disposal for the next two and a half months. The Italian knows that he needs the former Cherries star to be back to his best, and he is thus doing the right thing by trying to build up his confidence.READ MORE: Arne Slot stance on joining Tottenham or Man United revealed after ‘El Sackico’ drawThe post Alan Shearer says £60m Tottenham star is 'nowhere near good enough' after Man United showing appeared first on Spurs Web.
