Jermain Defoe has reacted to watching Tottenham Hotspur stay up at the expense of London rivals, West Ham United, on the final day of the season. The final day was always going to be a nervy one for Spurs fans, and that was certainly the case at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as 12 minutes of injury time were added on.With West Ham having won against Everton, De Zerbi’s men knew they needed to avoid conceding two late goals to survive. Thanks to some brilliant last-ditch defending and a brilliant late save by Antonin Kinsky, they managed to hold on to a 1-0 win and ensure that the club remained in the division they belong.Credit: @AlfieNicholsonJournalismJermain Defoe admits Tottenham could not have afforded relegationDefoe, who played for both Spurs and the Hammers, conceded that it would have been a body blow for the Lilywhites to drop down to the second tier for the first time in nearly 50 years. The former Tottenham man is hopeful that next season will be very different for the Lilywhites with De Zerbi in charge. When asked about Spurs staying up and West Ham going down, Defoe told Premier League Productions: “I just feel like it would’ve been a disaster if Spurs would’ve been relegated. The stadium, the training ground – when Daniel Levy was there, he was having the best in class. The managers we’ve had over the years.“For West Ham, not too long ago they won a European trophy. It looked like they passed that stage of fighting for relegation, so it’s going to be tough for those West Ham fans to accept that.“You’ve got to get your points on the board early so you don’t have to struggle at the end of the season. Hopefully, next season Spurs have a good season with the new manager.”Defoe admits Spurs players will be relieved after a difficult seasonSeveral Tottenham players have said that they are proud of their efforts in the final few games, although they conceded that the team fell well short of what was expected of them this campaign.Defoe believes that the feeling in the Spurs dressing room at the moment would be one of relief, as they look to put things right next term. The 43-year-old added: “I can imagine for the players, it’s been difficult. Not being able to give the fans anything at home to cheer about. At the beginning of the season, they looked decent on the road. You find yourselves in a situation where it goes down to the last day, you manage to do it, and it’s pure relief. You’ve got to look forward to next season.”READ MORE: ‘I truly believe that’ – James Maddison pens emotional message after Tottenham avoid relegationThe post ‘When Daniel Levy was there’ – Jermain Defoe reacts as Tottenham escape relegation scare appeared first on Spurs Web.
