A 29-year-old cab driver accused of crashing a van while allegedly six times over the alcohol limit, and later found to be transporting schoolchildren without the correct licence, has been denied bail.Abdullahi Mohammed Isse appeared in court on Tuesday over a traffic accident that happened at around 1am on 25th May in Triq l-Imdina, Żebbuġ as reported by Times of Malta.According to Police Inspector Clive Abela, officers found a van that had crashed into a central strip, with a female passenger suffering grievous injuries and later taken to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment. The court heard that Isse allegedly registered a breathalyser reading of 140.5g per 100ml of breath, around six times over the legal limit.For cab and taxi drivers in Malta, the legal alcohol limit is zero.Prosecutors also said Isse tested positive for cannabis.The court further heard that the accused allegedly did not possess the correct licence required to drive a 17-seater van, despite reportedly using the vehicle to transport children to school in the mornings.His employer is now also under investigation, with schools that made use of the company’s transport services reportedly contacted as part of ongoing inquiries.Isse pleaded not guilty to the charges.A request for bail was denied by Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech, who cited the serious nature of the accusations and raised concerns over the fact the accused had allegedly been transporting schoolchildren.The prosecution was led by police inspector Clive Abela, while lawyer Sarah Ciliberti appeared for the accused. •
