A youthful Ghana side, largely made up of Ghana Premier League players and U-23 prospects, suffered a 2-0 defeat to Mexico in an international friendly at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla on Saturday morning. The game, shown live on Joy Prime, offered Ghana’s fringe players an opportunity to impress ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup but also highlighted the gulf in experience and cohesion against a well-drilled Mexican side. With newly appointed head coach Carlos Queiroz and assistant coach Roger de Sá absent due to personal reasons, Ghana’s U-20 coach Desmond Offei took charge of the Black Stars on an interim basis.Mexico made a dream start, taking the lead just two minutes into the match after a costly mistake from Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare. The Hearts of Oak shot-stopper, handed a rare opportunity to stake a claim for a World Cup place, misplaced a pass under pressure, allowing Mexico’s Brian Gutiérrez to capitalise and curl home from long range.Despite the early setback, Asare recovered well and produced several important saves to deny Mexico from extending their lead before halftime.Ghana struggled to match the hosts’ intensity after the break, with debutants and fringe players including Dacosta Antwi and Manu Duah handed opportunities to impress.Substitutes David Oduro and Jerry Afriyie were also introduced as Offei looked to spark a response. However, Mexico doubled their advantage in the 54th minute when Guillermo Martínez found space in Ghana’s defence and calmly slotted past Asare to seal a comfortable win for the hosts.Ghana offered little attacking threat in the closing stages, with Mexico’s defence comfortably dealing with any build-up play from the visitors. The defeat extends Ghana’s poor record against Mexico, with the Black Stars now losing all five meetings between the two nations. The Black Stars will now turn their attention to a second warm-up match against Wales on June 2 before facing Jamaica on June 10, as preparations continue for their Group L opener against Panama at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
