Finance Minister Clyde Caruana has strongly criticised PN Leader Alex Borg after the PN leader claimed Malta borrowed €1 billion in the month before the election was called.Speaking at a political event on Wednesday, Borg cited European Central Bank figures and alleged that the government borrowed €1 billion between March and April. The PN later doubled down on the claim, accusing the government of attempting to delay publication of certain financial statistics until after the election. However, according to Times of Malta, Caruana rejected the allegation outright, calling Borg “financially illiterate” and accusing him of not understanding how national debt figures are measured.“Malta did not spend a billion euros in debt in a single month,” Caruana said, adding that the country does not even spend that amount in an entire year.According to the Finance Ministry, the figures Borg referred to involved non-consolidated debt statistics and included oversubscribed government bond offers, not actual spending. The Labour Party also accused Borg of either misunderstanding the figures or deliberately misleading voters ahead of Saturday’s election.Meanwhile, PN finance shadow minister Adrian Delia defended the claims and argued that the figures revealed increasing national debt levels that the government allegedly wanted to keep out of the spotlight before election day.Is Malta’s debt becoming a major election issue?•
