ShareAfter MLS paused for a mid-season World Cup break, the Portland Timbers have confirmed the departure of head coach Phil Neville.The Portland Timbers have confirmed they have parted ways with head coach Phil Neville by mutual agreement.With MLS pausing for a mid-season break due to the World Cup, the Timbers sit a disappointing 13th in the 15-team Western Conference.They have 14 points on the board from as many games this year, putting them six adrift of the playoff picture and 18 off their table-topping rivals, the Vancouver Whitecaps. Neville arrived in Portland in November 2023 ahead of the 2024 MLS campaign, when they snuck into the wild-card round of the playoffs but swiftly lost 5-0 to Vancouver.They again made the postseason in 2025, finishing one place higher in the West (eighth) than in the previous campaign, but another immediate exit awaited them as they were beaten by San Diego FC in a best-of-three series.In a statement to Portland's website, the former Manchester United and Everton full-back said: "To my staff, thank you for your incredible loyalty and hard work. "And to the most incredible bunch of players: thank you for the effort, the good times, the good results, the bad results, and all the laughs we shared together. "I realise we are in a results business, and the results haven't been to the expectations of this football club. "To the Timbers Army — you are the reason I felt inspired to try and bring success to this club. Keep getting behind the players and the club in this wonderful city.
