Capping a productive day for the team of Pegram, Watson and Weitman and trainer Bob Baffert, Desert Gate (Omaha Beach) powered away from his rivals with ease to score in the Texas Derby at Lone Star on Monday.The group was also represented by Usha (Tiz the Law), winner of the GIII Winning Colors Stakes at Churchill Downs on Monday.Pounded down to 1-5 favoritism while getting Lasix for the first time, Desert Gate broke sharply and put the screws to Vintage Cowboy (Essential Quality), who carved out an opening quarter mile in :23.49. Assuming control on the backstretch, the chestnut cut out a half mile in :47.54 and began to increase his advantage from there. Solidly in control at the top of the stretch, Desert Gate ran clear late to win by 6 1/4 lengths over Chad Allan (Union Rags), who nosed out Maximum Effort (Maxfield) at the wire.Victorious in his first two career starts, including Del Mar's GIII Best Pal Stakes last August, he finished runner-up in his next two starts–the GI Del Mar Futurity and Santa Anita's GI American Pharoah Stakes. Favored in his sophomore unveiling in the one-mile GIII Robert B.
