Diners at the Crazy Crab restaurant in Fairfax, Virginia, received a nasty shock after noticing a horrible racial slur typed out on their bill. The female diners were in utter disbelief when they saw the N-word at the bottom of their receipt and immediately complained but the restaurant manager didn’t take them seriously. Prior to being handed the bill the customers had been having a wonderful evening, celebrating their anniversary. However, as their evening drew to a close things quickly turned sour when they saw what was written at the bottom of their receipt. “Poquito Poquito,” which means “a little bit” in Spanish followed by the offensive racial slur. Speaking to Fox 5 DC spoke to one of the customers who explained that she and her partner were “shocked and in disbelief” over the whole thing. “I really could not process what was happening in that heat of the moment,” she stated, noting that she and her partner are Vietnamese and Hispanic. Unfortunately, we’ve seen racist messages on restaurant bills before, but usually it’s racist customers abusing minimum wage staff. A friend of the customer stated that they would no longer dine at the Crazy Crab following the incident, “I don’t want to give my money to someone that’s going to treat us like that.” Response from the Crazy Crab management According to the diner, the restaurant management initially brushed off her complaint about the slur when confronted about it as per the New York Post. At first, no action was taken by staff, it wasn’t until the friend of the diners posted a picture of the receipt online that management responded. Days after the incident, restaurant manager Rez Choudhury apologized to the customers and the community. Choudhury explained that the waiter who was accused of writing the N-word on the receipt was apparently new to the county and company and likely learned the slur from back-of-house staff while “goofing around” and likely typed it out on the receipt not realizing it would print out. The manager does admit that this was not an excuse for the waiter’s actions. It was also confirmed that the waiter in question was let go from their job after the incident. “We are deeply, deeply sorry. We are deeply apologetic about this whole incident. We have no words to express how remorseful we are,” Choudhury told Fox 5. It’s unlikely that the manager’s apology will get the diners who had to deal with the abuse to change their mind about going back there but that’s understandable. Hopefully this can be used as an opportunity to do better in the future despite the damage already done.
