Rico Verhoeven’s trainer claims referee made honest admission over Oleksandr Usyk stoppage

Peter Fury has claimed the referee told him he didn’t hear the bell when he stopped Rico Verhoeven on his feet against Oleksandr Usyk.Official Mark Lyson oversaw the astonishing action between unified heavyweight world champion Usyk and kickboxing icon Verhoeven in Egypt.Lyson has told Fury he didn’t hear the bell when stopping the clashIt saw Verhoeven put on an unlikely display and come ever so close to beating the Ukrainian, before the action was controversially halted in the 11th round.Lyson saw fit to step in and halt the action just as the bell sounded for the end of the period, in a contentious decision which angered many in the boxing world.Verhoeven has launched an appeal, and even suggested that the bell had already sounded, making the stoppage against the licensed rules. The Dutchman’s trainer Fury sought the opportunity to confront Lyson during their flight home from the desert setting. And he has claimed that Lyson told him he didn’t even hear the bell when calling a halt to proceedings.Fury told iFL TV: “The referee Mark was on the flight with me on the way back.“So I went over to him as that’s the way to go over and settle a dispute.“I wanted to know why he stopped the fight after the bell. The fight could have gone to points, or Usyk could have stopped him properly.“But the referee has made a mistake because that is what has caused the controversy.“He said to me, ‘Peter I didn’t hear the bell’. I said, ‘well that I believe as I didn’t hear the bell either’.Fury suggested Verhoeven was denied by a refereeing mistake“I thought it was two seconds before, he didn’t hear the bell. I will give him credit, we shook hands and it is what it is.“I think he realised he made a mistake, he said he was there to protect the fighter.”Verhoeven aggrieved but set for appealAn official appeal has now been lodged and it remains to be seen what action can be taken.Verhoeven was not impressed with the decision and believes that even if the bell was missed the conclusion to step in was premature.Usyk has since responded, insisting it is not his job to control the variables of how the fight ended. He added: “I do not think about this. A lot of people say, ‘Hey, it’s early’. Listen, it’s not my job. My job is boxing.”Boxing scheduleFor all the upcoming fights and results this year, check out talkSPORT.com’s  boxing schedule.
