FN Herstal has announced the FN MAG TACTICAL with Long Rail, the latest evolution of the company's long-serving general purpose machine gun platform. The update introduces a Long Rail Conversion Kit engineered to bring modern ergonomics and dual day/night optic capability to one of the most widely fielded GPMGs in history. The FN MAG has served in more than 90 nations since its development in the early 1950s, chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO and fielded under designations including the M240 in the United States and the L7A2 in the United Kingdom. FN Herstal describes the new TACTICAL variant as the only GPMG-category package solution to integrate in-line day and night operational capability alongside refined ergonomics, bringing the platform into alignment with features already present on the company's FN EVOLYS ultralight machine gun and FN MINIMI light machine gun.The centerpiece of the conversion is an 11-inch monolithic Picatinny-type top rail, which FN says provides approximately 14 inches of operational space for in-line day, night, or thermal optics while preserving compatibility with the original iron sights. The rail integrates an ambidextrous feed cover latch built on the company's SIDE-CLICK system, enabling one-handed cover operation from either side. A companion AUTO-LOCK retention mechanism holds the feed cover open during loading, unloading, or malfunction clearance, with a built-in stop at 62 degrees designed to protect mounted optics. FN says the system can retain up to 2.5 kilograms of optics hardware in the open position.Rounding out the kit is a redesigned articulated carrying handle compatible with full-size in-line optics during barrel changes, and an adjustable tactical buttstock offering three length-of-pull positions and six cheek rest height settings. The stock includes an integrated folding shoulder rest and soft butt plate and, according to FN, requires no modification to the existing GPMG operating system. Here’s a video to explain the news: FN VP Small Arms Christophe Soleil called the new configuration "the definitive choice for military organisations seeking decades of proven reliability alongside modern ergonomics and in-line optic capability," noting that three patents are pending on the technology. Soleil also emphasized that the configuration is fully supported by FN as the original designer and manufacturer. The Long Rail Conversion Kit is compatible with existing M240 and L7A2 platforms and can be installed by unit armourers using basic tools. The adjustable tactical buttstock is also available as a standalone upgrade. The FN MAG TACTICAL with Long Rail is slated for display at EUROSATORY in Paris, running June 15 through 19. It has served in more than 90 countries for over six decades. Does a conversion kit approach make more sense for a platform this entrenched than a clean-sheet replacement?
