A pair of Grade I turf tests in addition to the GII Hollywood Gold Cup highlight Santa Anita's Memorial Day card.Kicking off Monday's graded action, the Gold Cup will feature a quintet of hard-knocking handicappers, including Grade I winners Subsanador (Arg) (Fortify), victorious over ultimate champion National Treasure (Quality Road) in the 2024 renewal of the GI California Crown and last season's GI Big 'Cap winner British Isles (Justify). Now seven, the Argentine multiple Grade I winner returned off a 2 1/2-year hiatus to finish fourth in both starts in 2026 in the seven-furlong GIII San Carlos at Santa Anita and Oaklawn's Lake Ouachita Stakes on May 2.Trained by Richard Mandella, Wathnan Racing's Subsanador is the 2-1 second choice on the morning line.“The ground broke out from him; he stumbled pretty badly. At that point he kind of lost any hope,” Mandella said of Subsanador's most recent start.Since the Lake Ouachita, Subsanador has worked twice at Santa Anita. This past Monday, Subsanador posted an eye-catching six-furlong drill in 1:11.6.“That was first-class work,” confirmed Mandella.Hall of Famer Mike Smith rides Subsanador again in the Gold Cup. He was also aboard for the California Crown victory. The other Grade I scorer in the field is British Isles, trained by Richard Baltas. Grade II-placed last year, he finished fifth in the GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream in January before cruising home a 4 1/2-length winner in the Big 'Cap in March. He was last seen tiring to sixth in the GIII Ben Ali Stakes at Keeneland on Apr. 18. Joel Rosario gets the call. The 8-5 program favorite in the Gold Cup is Malarchuk (Nyquist), who made his first eight starts in the east for trainer Chad Brown before being entered in last year's Fasig-Tipton July Digital Sale. Malarchuk was purchased for $525,000 by the partnership of Reddam Racing and ERJ Racing and moved to trainer Michael McCarthy's barn at Santa Anita. ERJ Racing is led by retired NHL defenseman Erik Johnson. In his only start for his new connections, Malarchuk finished second in the Sunland Park Stakes going 1 1/8 miles at Sunland Park on Apr. 5. He'll be ridden by Juan Hernandez for the first time in the Gold Cup.Monday's graded stakes action on the dirt also includes Churchill's six-furlong GIII Winning Colors Stakes featuring Grade I winner Usha (Tiz the Law) in addition to the GIII Steve Sexton Mile at Lone Star.Grade I Action on the TurfLikely to take the lion's share of the money in the GI Gamely Stakes, Thought Process (Collected) comes into this nine-furlong affair a perfect three-for-three over the Santa Anita lawn. Winner of the GIII Surfer Girl Stakes in Arcadia at two, the chestnut added an allowance score at the venue last June before taking Del Mar's one-mile GII San Clemente Handicap. Third in the nine-furlong GI Del Mar Oaks, the Phil D'Amato-trained filly was last seen winning the one-mile GII Buena Vista here in February.“I was impressed. It looked like she did it the right way,” D'Amato said.Last Monday, Thought Process worked five furlongs in a sharp :58.8.“We've been waiting for this race. She's been training exceptionally,” D'Amato said.Take A Breath (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) is seemingly getting better with each start and enters the fray off a pair of victories at this venue. A nose winner in the 10-furlong GIII Santa Ana on Mar. 15, the 4-year-old added a narrow score over the re-opposing May Day Ready (Tapit) in the Apr. 25 GIII Royal Heroine. Also coming into this off a last-out win, Rashmi (Oscar Performance) was a seasonal debut winner in the one-mile GIII Wilshire Stakes in March as was Vronti (GB) (Night of Thunder {Ire}), looking to make her first start in California off a nine-furlong Keeneland allowance win for Graham Motion last month.Phil D'Amato tries to earn back-to-back wins in the GI Shoemaker with the help of King of Gosford (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}), who bested the returning Mi Hermano Ramon (Creative Cause) last season. Having finished in the top three on the Santa Anita turf in seven of eight lifetime starts, the chestnut was last seen finishing fourth behind stablemate Alemendares (GB) (Havana Grey {GB})  in the Apr. 18 GIII American Stakes.“I think he was a little too fresh that day. But he didn't disgrace himself,” D'Amato said of King of Gosford. “I think second time off the bench is when he runs his best race, like he did last year. He hasn't missed a beat since his comeback.”Of aAlmendares, D'Amato added, “I thought he showed a nice turn of foot that day. He's a horse that's going in the right direction.”The one to beat in Monday's feature for older turf horses is Formidable Man (City of Light), victorious in three of six starts in 2025–the GI Frank E. Kilroe Mile, the nine-furlong GII Eddie Read and GII Del Mar Mile. At generous 18-1 odds, he was last seen finishing runner-up behind Notable Speech (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the GI Breeders' Cup Mile at Del Mar on Nov. 1.Flavien Prat, who won on the bay in his career debut back in 2023, returns to ride here. The post Trio of Graded Stakes Headline Memorial Day Racing At Santa Anita appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
