After canceling their Saturday evening card due to potential threats posed by a chemical leak at a local aerospace manufacturing plant, Los Alamitos is scheduled to race Sunday. The mixed card begins 5:45 pm.On Thursday, a large, pressurized tank filled with thousands of gallons of methyl methacrylate-a toxic, highly flammable chemical used in the manufacture of resins and plastics-began leaking. The tank at GKN Aerospace in Garden Grove, Orange County, sits about 3.5 miles from Los Alamitos as the crow flies.Officials originally outlined two possible outcomes from the chemical leak. One was that the tank fails and as much as 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate would spill out into the parking lot.The second option was that the temperature inside the tank would keep rising, leading to an explosion.Firefighters have been dousing the tank with water and more than 40,000 local residents are under evacuation orders. Los Alamitos is outside of the evacuation zone.In a post on Twitter Sunday morning, Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) interim chief TJ McGovern explained that firefighters recently discovered a crack in the tank “which could potentially be relieving the pressure in there.”He added that officials are currently “vetting and validating” that information.According to a Los Alamitos press release issued Sunday, management will continue to “monitor the ongoing incident at the aerospace facility in Garden Grove.”They added, “The IMT (Incident Management Team), in consultation with the EPA and OCHCA, has established the evacuation zone. Any areas outside of this zone are currently considered completely safe, and day-to-day activities can continue as normal.”Further updates will be provided as they become available.
