Fitzdares Happy To Lay Derby Favourite And Nominate Double-Figure Runner As The Danger

Fitzdares bookmakers say they are more than happy to take on Derby favourite Benvenuto Cellini at odds of 2-1 and nominated 11-1 chance James J Braddock as being the most likely danger to the Aidan O'Brien-trained market leader. Benvenuto Cellini shot to the head of the Derby betting after winning the Chester Vase by over four lengths earlier this month. His odds hardened further on Wednesday when O'Brien confirmed that stablemate and impressive Dee Stakes winner Constitution River, who had been a general 4-1 chance for Derby glory, would instead be aimed at Sunday's Qatar Prix du Jockey Club. While trader Mark Cancea acknowledges that Benvenuto Cellini could go even shorter in the betting between now and June 6, he said the firm are keen to fill the satchel on the Frankel colt and said that the 11-1 available on Leopardstown winner James J Braddock are extremely tempting.Cancea said, “There has been support for Benvenuto Cellini all week and it has continued after Aidan O'Brien confirmed Constitution River for France on Wednesday. To be fair, Aidan O'Brien came out on Sunday and suggested that Constitution River would likely be going to France, and we saw money for the favourite as a result. That has obviously caused Benvenuto Cellini's price to contract as we lost a big percentage of the market with Constitution River coming out. To be honest, I could see Benvenuto Cellini going off even shorter – maybe even odds as short as 6-4, but we're very happy to lay him at current odds of 2-1.”He added, “The one that really interests me is James J Braddock. If you think about it, Pierre Bonnard was at the head of the Derby betting all winter, but couldn't get by Joseph O'Brien's runner in what is historically a good trial at Leopardstown. I don't see any reason as to why Pierre Bonnard would turn the form around with James J Braddock and odds of 11-1 look quite appealing to me.”Cancea relays a similar position on the Oaks, with plenty of support for Aidan O'Brien's Amelia Earhart at odds of 5-2. Again, the outfit is happy to take on the Ballydoyle favoruite. He said, “I'm not so sure that Amelia Earhart's Chester win reads as well as most people think. Basically, she beat I'm The One, who was well-talked up for John and Thady Gosden but perhaps that was all hype. I really like the credentials of Legacy Link, actually, for the Gosdens in the Oaks. She won the Musidora in good fashion and the Gosdens have targeted that race with some of their better Oaks fancies down through the years. I could also see Precise running a big race for Aidan O'Brien. She was very impressive in winning the Irish 1,000 Guineas and, if she stays, she has to have a big chance. But at 5-2, I think we'd be happy to take on Amelia Earhart as I don't think she ticks all of the boxes. If I was to have just one bet in the Oaks, it would have to be Legacy Link at 7-2, as much as I like Precise.”Meanwhile, Fitzdares are one of the first betting firms to take a major view on the first-season sires' market and have shortened Persian Force, who has seven wins on the board in Britain and Ireland, into a clear favourite at odds of 6-4.Cancea said, “The two that have made the biggest impression so far are Persian Force, who we cut from 2-1 into 6-4, and Bayside Boy, who is now just 5-1. When we looked at this market at the start of the year, I think we expected a lot of precocious types for Persian Force and that is exactly how it has played out so he deserves to lead the market given the start that he has enjoyed. The one we didn't really have any huge expectations about has been Bayside Boy but he just seems to have winners every other day and a lot of clever people seem to be standing up and taking note about the start that he has created because he is out-performing expectations. He was a massive price at the start of the year but is only 5-1 now.” The post Fitzdares Happy To Lay Derby Favourite And Nominate Double-Figure Runner As The Danger appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
