I get the feeling that- in addition to her many other poor choices- at least one of their trucks is financed by one of those small, independent car lots that has huge signs all over the property that say “We Finance EVERYONE!” which translates to loans with sky-high interest rates, a tracker on the vehicle, and the vehicle getting repossessed after a single missed payment. I was trying to picture prioritizing a car payment over actual food for my children, but… just… couldn’t. The fact that they have- and again, prioritize- car insurance tells me something too. My sister once dated a guy who really never worked, and just lived on the insurance settlements he got. I can’t prove that he did it intentionally, of course, but my sister was a passenger when he made a left turn in front of an oncoming car and got broadsided. His excuse was the dumbest thing I think I’ve ever heard: he just assumed the other driver would slam on their brakes to avoid hitting him. After the insurance companies settled everything, he sued the other driver’s insurance company for all that bullshit stuff like pain and suffering, lost wages (for a guy who didn’t even have a job). He kept bugging my sister to say she had neck and back pain after the accident, and wanted her to see this one chiropractor who had “worked with” him and his family in the past. He ended up getting a $15,000 settlement, which he kept for himself, despite the fact that much of the claim was based on my sister’s lost wages and alleged pain and suffering. It seems like all big companies have a “just go away” settlement fund because that payout ends up being cheaper than court costs and the billable hours of their lawyers. There seems to be a crossroads of choosing beggars, scam artists, and folks who are pretty good at gaming the system. Fortunately, they are willing to do so publicly for our entertainment!
