Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS) at magnitude 4.0, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.2, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) at magnitude 3.9, The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 3.9, and The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 3.9.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.In Agios Dimitrios (pop. 230) located 5 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.Weak shaking might have been felt in Andravida (pop. 3,600) located 13 km from the epicenter, Lechaina (pop. 3,700) 14 km away, Amaliada (pop. 16,800) 14 km away, Gastouni (pop. 8,100) 16 km away, and Pyrgos (pop. 22,400) 26 km away.Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Pátrai (pop. 168,000) located 46 km from the epicenter, Aigio (pop. 20,400) 69 km away, and Agrinio (pop. 46,900) 79 km away.If you were or still are in this area during the quake help others with your feedback and report it here.Download the Volcanoes & Earthquakes app and get one of the fastest seismic alerts online: Android | iOSI didn't feel itI felt this quakeEarthquake detailsDate & timeMay 25, 2026 18:50:02 UTC - Local time at epicenterMonday, May 25, 2026, at 09:50 pm (Europe/Athens GMT +3)StatusconfirmedMagnitude4.00Depth5 kmEpicenter latitude / longitude37.9115°N / 21.42°EDimos Ilida (Dimos Ilidas), West Greece, GreeceSeismic antipode37.9115°S / 158.58°WQuality87 seismic stationsShaking intensityIV Light shaking near epicenterFelt21 reportsPrimary data sourceEMSC (European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre)Nearest volcanoSousaki (147 km / 91 mi)Weather at epicenter at time of quakeScattered Clouds 21.4°C (71 F), humidity: 68%, wind: 3 m/s (6 kts) from NWEstimated seismic energy released6.3 x 1010 joules (17.5 megawatt hours, equivalent to 15.1 tons of TNT) | equivalent to ONE quake of magnitude 4.0 | about seismic energy14 minutes ago reported feltMay 25, 2026 18:50 GMT / May 25, 2026 09:50 pm (Athens time)Lat / Lng: 37.9115 / 21.42: Southern GreeceSource: EMSCOther sources: UOA: 3.9 / 10 km, AUTH: 3.9 / 5 km, 1 more...Detail info | Read user reports | You felt it? - Report it!';storedMarkers.push(['quake-23034443',37.91150,21.42000,'14 minutes ago: Mag. 4.0, Southern Greece',html,'quakes-6-24.png',25,25,12,12,125]); function mkRep(id,notFelt){var nFelt=notFelt||false;var src="https://www.volcanoesandearthquakes.com/app/earthquake-report.php?quakeId="+id;if(nFelt==true){src+="&notFelt=true";}window.open(src,"","status=0,toolbar=0,location=0,directories=0,menubar=0,resizable=1,scrollbars=1,height=400,width=350");} function locationHashChanged(e){-1!=e.oldURL.indexOf("#popupMap")&&closePopup()} window.onhashchange = locationHashChanged; function comment(e){var t=e.parentNode,a=(t.dataset.id,document.getElementById("commentForm"));"none"==a.style.display?(t.appendChild(a),a.style.display="block"):a.style.display="none"}function sendComment(e){var t=e.parentNode,a=t.parentNode.dataset.id,n=document.getElementById("commentContent"),p=n.value.trim();if(p){var o="id="+a+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId;o+="&comment="+decodeURIComponent(p),mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",o,function(e){e.responseText;alert("Thank you for submitting your comment!"),t.style.display="none",n.value=""})}}function flagReport(e){var t=e.parentNode.dataset.id;if(confirm("Report this as inappropriate?")){var a="id="+t+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId+"&flagAsInappropriate=1";mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",a,function(t){var a=t.responseText;alert(a),e.style.display="none"})}}function likeReport(e){var t="id="+e.parentNode.dataset.id+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId+"&like=1";mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",t,function(t){t.responseText;e.style.opacity=.5})}]]>[smaller] [bigger]Most recent quakes Top 20 past 24 hrs Quakes in CreteNearby placesThe closest larger town where the quake might have been felt is Pátrai, a city with more than 170,000 inhabitants in Greece, in 46 km (29 mi) distance northeast of the epicenter. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.Read more about the MMI scale!Number of reports by intensityShaking intensityNumber of reportsMin-Max distance from epicenter (*)Average distance (*)II: Very weak shaking1013.7–253 km (8.5–157 mi)92 km (57 mi)III: Weak shaking513.2–54 km (8.2–34 mi)31 km (19 mi)IV: Light shaking37.6–55 km (4.8–34 mi)30 km (19 mi)Notes(*) Reports are filtered to exclude those that are likely highly inaccurate or esaggerated.Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (21 in total) could be used for geographic statistics.Get the Android appI didn't feel itI felt this quakeIf you were near the epicenter and felt it, please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report!
