Now that the weekend is over, the final box office earnings numbers are in for the opening weekend of the latest installment in the Star Wars franchise: The Mandalorian & Grogu (2026). Sadly, the movie broke the only record filmmakers likely hoped it would not: the lowest box-office opening in the history of the iconic Lucasfilm franchise. The Mandalorian & Grogu Box Office OpeningCredit: LucasfilmAccording to Deadline, the domestic box office opening of The Mandalorian & Grogu brought in $102 million, and the international box office earned $63 million. Previously, the record for the lowest box-office opening in Star Wars history was held by Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), which brought in $103 million domestically and $65 million internationally over the same four-day Memorial Day weekend. The demand for The Mandalorian & Grogu was likely even lower than the difference in earnings suggests, as inflation has significantly raised the price of movie tickets over the last eight years.Still, The Mandalorian & Grogu performed better than critics initially projected. Early reports indicated that the Star Wars film, the first in the franchise since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019), would only bring in around $80 million domestically during its four-day opening weekend. Contrarily, The Rise of Skywalker was a massive success, earning $374 million globally during its opening weekend.Credit: LucasfilmDespite the record-breaking box-office opening, Disney will likely break even on The Mandalorian & Grogu during its theatrical run. The film cost roughly $300 million to produce and has already recouped half of those costs. As of May 25, the average critical score on Rotten Tomatoes is around 62%, while the average audience rating is around 82%.The Mandalorian & Grogu stars Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin in the role he originated for the wildly successful Disney+ series The Mandalorian. The legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter and his apprentice, Grogu, are recruited by the New Republic to rescue Rotta the Hutt (Jeremy Allen White). The film also stars Sigourney Weaver as Ward.
